Industrial Hygiene Technician

Position Summary:


The Industrial Hygiene Technician is responsible for conducting workplace assessments to evaluate potential exposure to hazards, performing hazardous materials surveys, and ensuring compliance with safety and health standards. The role prioritizes candidates with experience or interest in oil & gas (upstream, midstream), energy and water distribution, demolition, asbestos abatement, indoor air quality (IAQ), and testing for workplace chemical stressors. This position works under the guidance and supervision of a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to ensure high-quality performance and adherence to industry standards.

Pay Range: $33.00-$41.00 hourly


Key Responsibilities:

  • Industrial Hygiene Surveys: Conduct evaluations to identify potential worker exposures to physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, with an emphasis on oil & gas, energy, and water distribution sectors.
  • Hazardous Materials Surveys: Perform assessments related to asbestos, lead-based paint, heavy metals, PCBs, NORM, and other hazardous materials in demolition, renovation, and industrial projects.
  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Testing: Conduct air sampling and IAQ assessments to address potential health impacts in commercial and industrial environments.
  • Chemical Stressor Testing: Evaluate workplaces for chemical exposures, including VOCs, heavy metals, and other hazards, and recommend appropriate controls.
  • Waste Characterization Sampling: Collect and analyze samples for proper classification and regulatory-compliant disposal of waste materials.
  • Project Oversight: Provide industrial hygiene and safety oversight during hazardous material abatement projects, particularly asbestos abatement and demolition activities.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Interpret and apply EPA, OSHA, and other relevant agency standards to ensure projects meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • Reporting: Document findings and recommendations in detailed, professional reports tailored to client needs.
  • Collaboration with CIH: Work under the direction of a Certified Industrial Hygienist, receiving mentorship and technical oversight to ensure best practices in industrial hygiene and safety are followed.
  • Travel & Flexibility: Conduct interstate and intrastate travel as needed, with occasional weekend work required.
  • Ethical Practice: Prioritize safety, environmental protection, and property preservation in all professional duties.

Required Qualifications:

  • Driver's License: Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to travel, with mileage reimbursed at the IRS rate.
  • Physical Capability: Ability to work in diverse conditions (hot, cold, uneven, elevated, or confined spaces) while wearing required PPE.

Technical Skills:

  • Perform basic industrial hygiene calculations, including Time-Weighted Averages (TWA).
  • Quantify surface areas and volumes of structures and vessels.
  • Create basic mapping of sample locations on floor plans.
  • Write detailed technical descriptions of industrial tasks, PPE, and industrial processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Professionalism: Maintain a positive, professional demeanor in interactions with clients and team members.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience: Familiarity with work in the following sectors is highly desirable:
    Oil & gas (upstream, midstream)
    Energy and water distribution
    Demolition and asbestos abatement
    Indoor air quality (IAQ) assessment
    Testing for workplace chemical stressors

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or occupational safety & health.
  • Certified Asbestos Consultant or Certified Site Surveillance Technician.
  • CDPH Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor or Lead Sample Technician.
  • BCSP Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST).

Work Environment:

This position involves exposure to various environmental conditions and may include physical activities such as climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces. Compliance with PPE requirements and safety standards is mandatory.
