About the role:

In this role, you will provide biodiversity expertise for Alcoa's overall biodiversity strategy development, develops conservation strategy beyond regulatory compliance, and provides guidance and expertise for other functions, including Operations. Acts as external face of Alcoa on biodiversity topics and communications. Drives networking and collaboration with global external stakeholders and entities.

Major activities/Key challenges

  • Accountable for the development and implementation of the company biodiversity strategy, ensuring alignment with business imperatives, current and impending regulations, and evolving stakeholder expectations.
  • Works collaboratively to integrate biodiversity management across ESG dimensions including social performance, human rights, water and decarbonization.
  • Develops, implements, and supports policies and standards related to biodiversity management and ecosystem services, and mine rehabilitation.
  • Collaborates with the responsible sourcing team to ensure biodiversity and ecosystem services risks in Alcoa's supply chains and logistic networks are identified and appropriately managed.
  • Defines indicators, targets and KPIs to track and communicate biodiversity performance internally and externally, aligned with disclosure requirements.
  • Monitors the external landscape (key events, stakeholders, issues) and business implications for Alcoa.
  • Serves as a pro-active advisor to senior executives for strategic decision-making on biodiversity management, ecosystem services and mine rehabilitation.
  • Represents Alcoa in industry, government and academic forums (eg. ASI, ICMM, IAI) in order to build reputation and benchmark company performance against peers.
  • Leads and develops regional and location capacity to manage risks and generate new fundamental scientific knowledge and improvements in biodiversity and ecosystem management.
  • Provides high-level assessments of biodiversity, ecosystem services and mine rehabilitation for joint ventures, potential acquisitions and new project proposals.
  • Communicate progress/results through written technical reports, presentations and publications; initiate formal technical exchange meetings/forums.
  • Maintain strong linkages internally with environmental research effort, and externally with universities, government agencies, or other corporations.
  • Support Investor Relations in interactions with investors, shape external reporting and disclosure on biodiversity performance.


What you can bring to the role:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in biodiversity, conservation, or environmental management, with at least 5 years in a leadership or strategic advisory role.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing biodiversity strategies at a corporate or organizational level.
  • Experience working with rehabilitation, restoration, and biodiversity offsets within an industrial and/or manufacturing setting. Experience with mining or extractive industries is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and engage with external stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, and industry groups.
  • Familiarity with relevant reporting frameworks and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience representing organizations in international forums (e.g., ASI, ICMM, IAI) and contributing to policy or industry standards.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity-related risk assessment in supply chains and project development.
  • Fluency in English is essential; additional languages, particularly French and/or Portuguese, are a plus.
