About the Role
Our in-house legal team have a rare opportunity for a well-rounded and highly motivated Legal Counsel to join us on a permanent basis and contribute towards the effective and efficient delivery of legal services to Alcoa's Australian operations, which form one of the world's largest integrated bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminium smelting systems.
As our Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in providing expert legal advice and guidance across key business areas including commercial, energy, mining, health and safety, environment, and human resources, collaborating closely with global functions to support in navigating complex legal challenges. You will directly influence our operations and deliver meaningful outcomes by:
Providing strategic legal advice and management on critical issues, including regulatory and market developments, governance, and best practices, to ensure Alcoa's business continuity.
Operating autonomously whilst fostering stakeholder engagement across jurisdictions, primarily in Western Australia and Victoria, with a global focus as needed.
Collaborating with operational teams, delivering impactful communication to support decision-making under high-risk and time-sensitive conditions.
Managing relationships with external legal counsel, lead crisis response, apply risk frameworks, and drive governance in decision-making processes.
Planning, developing, and delivering legal training to the business, including senior leadership, while actively participating in team meetings and embracing self-development initiatives.

What you can bring to the role
Tertiary qualifications in Law coupled with a current local practicing certificate for Western Australia.
An extensive background in managing complex legal issues and successfully delivering large projects within the resources sector.
Detailed knowledge of legislation across a variety of areas including commercial, energy, mining, health and safety, environment, and human resources will be preferable.
Demonstrated experience leading complex commercial negotiation and drafting.
Strong willingness to learn new areas of law and work towards autonomously managing your own portfolios within the broader legal team.
Exceptional organisational and communication skills, and confidence in dealing with senior stakeholders both internal and external to Alcoa.

Alcoa Australia is currently located in Booragoon, WA, but will be relocating to the western end of St Georges Terrace in Perth CBD in Q3 2025. The Booragoon office is situated on Whadjuk Noongar land, 16 kilometres away from Perth's CBD. The office is situated next to Garden City and hosts employees from across several business units, including Commercial, Finance, Sustainability, Communications, Human Resources and the Global Refinery of the Future team.
