THE ROLE:

  • AMD is looking for an experienced Linux Driver Development Apps Engineer to support AMD Embedded and x86 customers across Linux driver development, system software enablement, platform bring-up, customer issue triage, technical escalation, debug, validation alignment, and production readiness.
  • This role serves as the technical bridge between customers, FAEs, Product Management, Program Management, Linux Driver Engineering, Firmware Engineering, BIOS Engineering, Platform Engineering, Validation, QA, and Customer Support teams.
  • The Apps Engineer will own customer-facing technical engagements from initial requirement clarification through Linux driver analysis, issue reproduction, root cause investigation, workaround development, engineering escalation, fix validation, and closure. The role requires strong Linux kernel and driver development expertise combined with customer-first communication, structured problem solving, and disciplined engineering execution.
  • The successful candidate will help customers successfully deploy AMD Embedded x86 platforms by resolving Linux driver, BSP, kernel, device enablement, hardware/software interaction, and platform integration issues across customer use cases

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with strong Linux driver development expertise, system-level debug capability, and proven experience supporting customer or field engineering engagements.

This person is comfortable operating in high-ambiguity customer situations, translating customer observations into actionable engineering problems, and driving closure across globally distributed teams.

  • Strong customer-facing presence with clear, structured, and professional communication.
  • Deep technical curiosity and ownership mindset for customer issue resolution.
  • Ability to engage across Linux kernel, device drivers, firmware, BIOS, silicon, board, validation, and product domains.
  • Comfortable working with FAEs, customer engineers, engineering specialists, open-source/Linux teams, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Able to prioritize customer escalations while maintaining disciplined technical triage and execution rigor.
  • Strong hands-on debugging skills across Linux, drivers, firmware interactions, and platform hardware.
  • Comfortable working in a lab environment with embedded platforms, reference boards, and customer hardware.

A self-starter with the ability to accomplish complex Linux driver debug and platform enablement independently while collaborating with engineering teams to resolve customer issues.

AMD's environment is fast paced, results oriented, and built upon a legion of forward-thinking people with a passion for winning technology. This is an extraordinary opportunity to work in an outstanding company like AMD. Join us!

If you enjoy solving complex Linux driver issues, debugging hardware/software interactions, enabling customer platforms, and driving issues to closure, then this is the role for you.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Customer Technical Ownership

    • Act as the primary technical interface for customer issues related to Linux drivers, BSPs, kernel integration, platform enablement, and system software behavior.
    • Own customer-facing technical engagements from initial issue intake through triage, debug, engineering escalation, fix validation, and closure.
    • Translate customer-reported symptoms into clear technical problem statements and actionable engineering investigations.
    • Provide technical recommendations, workarounds, debug guidance, and closure summaries to customers and FAEs.

    Linux Driver Development & Debug

    • Support Linux driver development, integration, debug, and issue resolution for AMD Embedded x86 platforms.
    • Analyze and debug Linux kernel, driver, BSP, and platform software issues.
    • Investigate driver interactions with firmware, BIOS, silicon, hardware interfaces, and operating system components.
    • Support device enablement and driver-level troubleshooting across customer platforms.
    • Review and analyze kernel logs, driver traces, crash dumps, boot logs, and system diagnostics.

    Customer Issue Triage

    • Own structured triage of customer issues, including reproduction strategy, technical data collection, debug coordination, prioritization, tracking, and closure.
    • Reproduce customer-reported Linux driver and system software issues in AMD labs.
    • Identify whether issues are caused by driver defects, kernel configuration, firmware interaction, platform configuration, hardware behavior, documentation gaps, or customer integration issues.
    • Drive timely resolution while maintaining clear technical ownership and communication.

    Platform Bring-Up & Enablement

    • Support customer bring-up activities across prototype, validation, qualification, and production phases.
    • Assist with Linux BSP enablement, driver configuration, kernel boot, device enumeration, peripheral validation, and board-level software readiness.
    • Collaborate with BIOS, firmware, and platform teams to resolve boot, initialization, enumeration, and runtime issues.
    • Support production readiness reviews for Linux-based customer deployments.

    Engineering Escalation Management

    • Engage Linux Driver Engineering, Firmware, BIOS, Silicon, Validation, QA, Product Management, and Program Management teams when engineering support is required.
    • Create complete engineering escalation packages with reproduction procedures, logs, traces, driver analysis, kernel configuration details, customer impact, and root-cause hypotheses.
    • Track escalations through closure and validate engineering fixes before customer release.
    • Ensure clear ownership, accountability, and decision-making across stakeholder teams.
    • Customer Communication

      • Provide timely, technically accurate customer updates, issue summaries, workaround guidance, validation results, closure notes, and escalation status.
      • Communicate complex technical issues in a structured and customer-consumable manner.
      • Partner with FAEs and customer-facing teams to ensure consistent messaging and technical clarity.

      Field Team Enablement

      • Support FAEs and customer-facing teams with Linux driver technical guidance, debug methodology, issue background, support workflows, and product capability clarification.
      • Develop Linux driver troubleshooting guides, known issue summaries, debug checklists, and knowledge base content.
      • Help improve support readiness for future customer escalations.

      Cross-Functional Closure

      • Drive issue resolution through defined workflows and ensure clear ownership across Linux Driver Engineering, Firmware, BIOS, Platform Engineering, Validation, QA, and Product teams.
      • Balance customer urgency with engineering execution discipline.
      • Drive closure for customer production issues, validation blockers, and platform readiness gaps.

      Continuous Improvement

      • Identify recurring Linux driver and system software issues and drive support-deflection initiatives.
      • Contribute to documentation improvements, debug playbooks, validation checklists, and customer enablement material.
      • Drive automation for log collection, issue reproduction, regression validation, and debug productivity.
      • Improve customer issue turnaround time through reusable tools, scripts, and workflows.
