Overview

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, performs advanced technical activities including preparation of sterile products, narcotic control, outpatient pharmacy operations, unit based drug modules (Pyxis/Diebold) inventory management or drug order receiving and inventory management.Performs two or more of the following functions. Works with dangerous substances and or highly technical equipment. Must recognize and avoid conditions that place patient safety at risk.

Essential functions:

Maintains security and accountability of narcotics and other controlled substances. Distributes controlled substances. Prepackages drugs and maintains control records, compounds medication under Pharmacist direction.

Performs technical maintenance or service of computerized or automated systems.

Loads, calibrates, and operates automated compounding machines.

Prepares complex total parental nutrition solutions and/or operates robotics medication equipment requiring advanced computer skills and broad knowledge of medications and dosage forms.

Packages and repackages medications using automated packaging equipment, maintains inventories of essential unit dose and unit of use medications.

Prepares mixtures of non-sterile products maintaining essential inventories.

Assesses daily stock needs and distributes solutions and medications to automated Unit Based Drug Modules.

Maintains IV fluid, dialysate and irrigation fluid inventory and distributes to patient care areas to maintain required stock on the floors.

Interviews outpatients, fills outpatient prescriptions for pharmacist review, maintains outpatient prescription records, and restocks outpatient drug supply.

Operates and maintains automated outpatient prescription management system.

Performs functions of pharmacy surgery satellite technician.

Maintains drug supply system in extremely high risk and time critical environment.

Education, Experience, and Training:

Completion of high school or GED required. Completion of at least one course of algebra (or high math equivalent) and one course of chemistry or biology.

Two (2) years as pharmacy technician.

Registration with the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy is required.

Pharmacy Technician Certification or six years pharmacy technician experience with demonstrated skills in unit dose, sterile products, distribution, and retail service lines.
