Why This Role Matters:

The Banfield Vice President, People & Organization (P&O = HR) exists to enable the business and culture to thrive through developing and executing people strategy in partnership with Mars Veterinary Health Centers of Expertise and Deployment (COE&D) and Banfield's Senior Leadership Team (SLT). A key member of both the MVH P&O Leadership Team and Banfield's SLT, this role ensures that P&O priorities are fully aligned with business strategy—driving growth, operational performance, and an exceptional Associate experience across all hospitals and the support center.

The VP, P&O, provides strategic partnership to Banfield's senior leaders and oversees key areas of People & Organization capabilities within the business, including hospital talent acquisition, compensation, business partnering, and the execution of talent management, culture, and health and well-being initiatives. The role also partners closely with the global P&O COE&Ds to ensure consistent delivery of best-in-class experiences and alignment with enterprise-wide people strategies.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record leading P&O in large, multi-unit healthcare, Petcare, or retail organizations and will bring the strategic thinking, business acumen, and people leadership required to drive performance and create a cohesive, engaged workforce that delivers on
Banfield's purpose.

You Will:

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Partner with Banfield's Senior Leadership Team and Mars Veterinary Health (MVH) to align people and organization priorities with business strategy, driving growth, operational performance, and an exceptional Associate experience.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, providing thought leadership on workforce planning, leadership development, and change management.

  • Collaborate closely with global P&O Centers of Expertise to ensure consistency, best-practice sharing, and alignment of enterprise-wide people strategies.

  • Champion a data-driven approach to decision-making, leveraging insights to shape workforce and culture initiatives that support Banfield's purpose and performance.

Talent Acquisition & Workforce Planning

  • Lead the execution of talent acquisition and retention strategies for DVMs, veterinary technicians, and hospital roles to attract, hire, and retain top talent in a competitive market.

  • Partner with operations to ensure staffing levels and workforce plans align with patient demand, business priorities, and future growth needs.

  • Amplify and sustain an employer brand that positions Banfield as a destination for veterinary and support talent through an exceptional candidate and Associate experience.

Talent Development & Leadership Pipeline
  • Oversee the business's talent management practices, leveraging Mars and MVH leadership development courses and frameworks to identify, grow, and retain top talent.

  • Implement succession planning for critical roles to ensure leadership continuity and strengthen internal bench strength.

  • Drive a high-performance culture by embedding effective performance management, development planning, and continuous feedback across the organization.

Organizational Culture, Inclusion & Change
  • Lead efforts to strengthen Banfield's values-driven, inclusive, and performance-oriented culture that fosters collaboration, wellbeing, and engagement.

  • Champion diversity and inclusion initiatives that ensure all Associates feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best.

  • Serve as a change leader during transformation and growth, ensuring clear communication, engagement, and support for Associates throughout periods of change.

Associate Engagement, Health & Wellbeing
  • Execute strategies designed to enhance Associate engagement, satisfaction, and retention across hospital and support center teams.

  • Partner with the Health & Wellbeing CoE to embed programs that promote holistic wellbeing—mental, physical, social, and financial—into the Associate experience.

  • Monitor engagement data and feedback, identify trends, and implement action plans that strengthen connection, inclusion, and performance.

Compensation, Rewards & Recognition
  • Oversee Banfield's hospital compensation programs, ensuring they are competitive, equitable, and aligned with market trends and financial objectives.

  • Partner with the global Total Rewards COE to guide compensation strategy and annual review processes that attract and retain high-performing talent.

  • Support the execution of recognition and reward programs that reinforce culture, performance, and Associate impact.

P&O Operations, Governance & Compliance
  • Ensure P&O policies, practices, and systems are effectively implemented across Banfield's operations, maintaining compliance with all labor, healthcare, and employment regulations.

  • Leverage technology and analytics to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and deliver actionable insights that inform people and business decisions.

  • Uphold Mars' standards of ethics, integrity, and compliance in all P&O programs, ensuring accountability and transparency across the organization.

Context and Scope

The Vice President, People & Organization (P&O) at Banfield operates as a strategic and execution-focused member of Banfield's Senior Leadership Team and the MVH P&O Leadership Team. The role partners closely with Banfield's President and senior leaders across Operations, Finance, Medicine, and other Support Functions to ensure people priorities directly enable business performance and Associate engagement.

Working through a business-embedded P&O team, the VP, P&O executes core people programs—talent acquisition, compensation, talent management, culture, and health and wellbeing—ensuring they are delivered consistently and in alignment with Mars and MVH enterprise strategies.

The role partners closely with global P&O Centers of Expertise, leveraging their tools, frameworks, and programs to deliver scalable, best-in-class solutions tailored to Banfield's needs. Collaboration with P&O peers across MVH business units ensures a unified approach to talent, culture, and leadership development that supports the broader “One MVH” vision.

This role connects enterprise strategy with local execution—translating global direction into meaningful outcomes for Banfield's Associates, leaders, and business performance.

Your Experience Should Include:
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, Healthcare Management, or a related field is required.

  • An MBA or advanced degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or a related discipline is highly preferred.

  • Professional certifications such as SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or equivalent is desirable.

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and staying current on emerging trends in HR, digital enablement, AI, and data-driven practices.

  • 12–15 years of progressive HR experience, including at least 7–10 years in senior HR leadership roles within large, multi-unit, or multi-location organizations—ideally in healthcare, Petcare, or retail service environments.

  • Deep understanding of clinical and operational workforce dynamics, including the unique challenges of recruiting and retaining DVMs, veterinary technicians, and other hospital professionals.

  • Proven ability to execute P&O and people strategies that enable business growth, operational excellence, and positive Associate and client outcomes.

  • Demonstrated success leading talent acquisition, compensation, talent management, Associate engagement, leadership development, and culture initiatives in complex, distributed businesses.

  • Skilled in change leadership and transformation, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, build alignment, and sustain engagement during periods of growth and organizational evolution.

  • Strong business and financial acumen, with the ability to translate business needs into people's strategies that drive performance, scalability, and impact.

  • Experience using data, analytics, and emerging technology (including AI- enabled P&O tools) to inform decisions, measure impact, and enhance Associate experience and operational efficiency.

  • Exceptional ability to influence, collaborate, and build trust with senior leaders, cross-functional partners, and Associates across diverse geographies and functions.

  • High emotional intelligence and cultural awareness, with a track record of fostering inclusion, collaboration, and accountability in large, mission- driven organizations.

  • Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.

  • Project timelines and work volume/deadlines may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job.
