Description
1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.
2. Supports the day-to-day operations of the EKG department to ensure timely results and efficient workflow.
3. Coordinates the scheduled daily activities to ensure that work is completed in a timely manner. This includes entering orders, opening referrals, and scheduling patients and coordinating appointments with Nuclear Medicine, Echo, Cardiology and other physicians.
4. Gives patients instructions on preparation, instructions and directions before appointment. Distributes preliminary and final reports to providers.
5. Performs quality non-invasive electrocardiographic testing, ensuring proper lead placement, properly and accurately obtaining tracings, documents/charts observations and other data related to the clinical condition of the patient's electrical heart tracings. Recognizes major clinical arrhythmias that can be seen on an EKG and recognize any ischemic and ST changes on an ECG, reporting these to the healthcare provider.
6. Performs Exercise Treadmill Stress testing under a physician or cardiologist's supervision. This includes following procedure protocols, patient preparation, obtaining patient history and must be able to identify all major clinical arrhythmias, ischemic and ST changes.
7. Performs Nuclear Treadmill Cardiac Stress testing under a physician or cardiologist's supervision. This includes following procedure protocols, patient preparation, obtaining patient history and must be able to identify all major clinical arrhythmias, ischemic and ST changes.
8. Performs Nuclear Pharmacological Cardiac Stress testing under a physician or cardiologist's supervision. This includes following procedure protocols, patient preparation, obtaining patient history and must be able to identify all major clinical arrhythmias, ischemic and ST changes.
9. Performs Holter Monitor hook-up connections and disconnections on patients. Scans the recorded data and prepares a preliminary report findings.
10. Performs Echocardiography Treadmill Cardiac Stress testing under a physician for Cardiologist supervision.
11. Performs connection and deactivation of event monitoring equipment of auto-triggering devices, looping, non-looping and Zio-Patch connections. Educates patient on proper usage of devices. This includes following procedure protocols, patient preparation, obtaining patient history and must be able to identify all major clinical arrhythmias, ischemic and ST changes.
12. Responds to codes or rapid responses as needed.
13. Oversees the ordering, receiving and stocking of supplies.
14. Ensures that all equipment is in working order and free from cord or other damage and cleaned and disinfected.
15. Ensures that communication to all staff is done in timely manner.
16. Develops departmental policies and procedures that guide EKG testing and ensure compliance.
17. Ensures all lab assistants and nurses are trained to perform EKGs as needed.
18. Recognizes unusual situations outside of his/her expertise and seeks guidance of supervisor or other appropriate staff.
19. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
Summary of Position:
The EKG Technologist (aka ECG Technologist) supports the day-to-day operations of the EKG Department to ensure timely results and efficient workflow. They perform EKG testing according to established policies and procedures; ensuring testing is safe and effective.
Qualifications:
Education:
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Completion of an accredited EKG program or Rhythm Interpretation class with certification.
Experience:
• Completion of Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology courses or one year of previous experience in a healthcare environment preferred
• Sufficient computer skills as are required to complete an online application and the pre-employment/annual Net Learning requirements
• In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Able to perform EKGs and other related procedures in the department based on established policies and procedures
• Holter monitor experience preferred. If no experience, training and competency will be required after hire as part of job duty.
• Stress test experience preferred. If no experience, training and competency will be required after hire as part of Job duty.
• Cardiology course preferred or required within 1 year after hire date.
• Understanding of anatomy and physiology of the heart in order to perform tests appropriately.
Certifications/Licensure:
• EKG certification required, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.
• CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date
