*** 5 days a week - 8 hour shifts ***

Summary of Position:  

The RN – Medical Oncology position works with all members of the Oncology Care Team by performing a variety of clinical and administrative patient-related duties as established in the roles and responsibilities defined below. The RN assists the oncology provider in the office setting. The RN actively participates in team huddles and care team meetings.  The RN provides professional nursing care, that is safe and effective, utilizing established policies and procedures.  The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care in collaboration with physicians and practitioners. The RN coordinates department activities, ensures the safety of patients and staff, and ensures that adequate medical supplies are ordered and are on the premises. 

 

Qualifications

Education: 

● Completion of an accredited Nursing program

● Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. 

● ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certification preferred.

● Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI) or Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred.

 

Experience: 

● At least one year of nursing work experience.   

● Oncology care/physician office experience preferred.  

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

● Ability to educate patients/families/caregivers in individual or groups settings.   

● Knowledge of oncology disease symptom management, care coordination, responding to patient emergencies, and process improvement.   

● Highly effective written and verbal communications skills.   

● Excellent interpersonal skills.   

● Proficient computer skills as required to document, communicate and enter information into the electronic medical records system.   

● In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English; Bilingual abilities preferred.  

 

Certifications/Licensure: 

● Current CPR/BLS certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for the Healthcare Provider) or ability to obtain prior to start date.  

● If California is your primary home dept, then California RN license required and obtain Nevada RN within 6 months

Essential Functions 

1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.  

2. Provides and educates patients on abnormal results per physician/provider direction.  

3. Under the direction of the medical provider, performs diversified duties both within and in support of the department.  

4. Assists physicians/providers with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care. Keeps patient/family informed. Focuses on customer service needs.  

5. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. 

6. Triages patient calls using nursing assessment skills and provides relevant information to provider.  Follows all safety precautions related to patient ID, order confirmation, calculations, and double-checking dose accuracy when applicable.  

7. Advises patients on symptom management under the direction of the provider. Proactively assesses the patient to prevent emergency department utilization and prevent subsequent inpatient hospitalization when appropriate. 

8. Coordinates patient care plan with support staff including: social workers, navigators, dieticians, pharmacists, financial advocates, and other care providers.  

9. Monitors and ensures accuracy of documentation in patient medical record. All aspects of patient care are accurately and completely documented in appropriate medical record system.  

10. Ensures narcotic administration is recorded in appropriate state reporting system. Recognizes unusual conditions outside of his/her expertise and seeks guidance of coworkers or supervisors.  

11. Operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner. Insures proper functioning of equipment and follows procedure when equipment malfunctions.  

12. Collaborates with clinical peers to evaluate current practices.  

13. Responds to the needs of the department by performing other duties, as necessary.
