JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Provides excellent customer service during the emergency room patient access/intake process. Works collaboratively with and under the direct supervision of a

registered nurse to participate in the delivery of patient care for the improvement of quality of life for patients and families. Responsible for the clerical and administrative activities in the Emergency Department, fulfilling or communicating customer requests, data entry and the facilitation of communication between patient care team members.  Job is performed to meet the needs of the age population served as defined in the department's scope of service.

 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

 

  1. Facilitates patient safety with accurate and timely patient identification.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Follows all policies and procedures to accurately identify the patient. 
  • Prior to applying the patient's armband, reviews all patient identifying data on the armband with the patient.  Does NOT apply armbands that are not correct.  Replaces armbands when a discrepancy had been identified and corrected.
  • Takes accurate messages and repeats key information to ensure accuracy.
  • Recognizes unusual situations or questions and refers to appropriate staff.
  • Tactfully handles telephone calls in difficult situations

 

 

 

2.         Prepares, compiles and maintains unit records.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Prepares forms and maintains files required for daily unit functioning.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of documentation procedures, chart forms and medical/pharmaceutical terminology.
  • Provides accurate change-of-shift report and clarifies ambiguous information.
  • Prepares all medical records for admission, transfer or discharge.
  • Maintains patient information.
  • Retrieves patient information from various sources (including tube system, fax, etc.) and places in appropriate area.

           

 

3.         Participates in the admission and patient access process, including patient registration and discharge processes.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Communicates all pending admissions and room assignments to the charge nurse.
  • Conducts a confidential and professional interview with patients or the patient's representative and completes pre-registration, registration or discharge collections accurately.   
  • Follows all Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) regulations.
  • Receives and assists patients and visitors to the unit in accordance with Everyday Excellence values.
  • Ensures the appropriate department receives medical records in a timely manner and in accordance with policy.
  • Performs direct and indirect patient care promptly and courteously as directed by registered nurse and/or physician to facilitate patient flow through the Emergency Department.

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Assists in the initial assessment and management of illness or injury to emergency patients in accordance with specified protocol and procedure.
  • Reports changes in the patient's condition, in a timely and accurate manner, to the patient's primary nurse.
  • Provides direct treatment care according to hospital policy (i.e., splints, ace wraps, dressings, connecting to monitors, urinary catheterization and skin preps) in conformity with recognized safe practices.
  • Assists with the collection and transport of specimens in accordance with the universal precaution policy.
  • Assists with the admission, discharge and transfer of patients to the unit.
  • Performs effectively in emergency response situations in accordance with BRGMC policies and procedures.
  • Assists patients with elimination (bedpan, urinal, portable commode, bathroom).
  • Assists physicians with minor surgeries.
  • Keeps patients and families advised of treatment processes and any delays in their treatment.
  • Performs venipuncture for blood samples after documented competency.

                       

 

           

5.         Performs all other duties as assigned

     

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Successful completion of a medical assistant, nursing assistant or EMT course preferred.

One-year experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

 

 

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

High school graduation preferred.

 

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

Computer experience and clerical skills preferred.

                                 

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patient related complaints, information related to patient location, patients' religious beliefs, research information, and/or public health records. 

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, transporting patients, transporting medications and blood, and monitoring clinical alarms.
