Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Sustainable Practices, the Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1 - Stormwater Lab (12 - 18 month project position) will organize, manage, and run stormwater lab and field sampling, outreach events, and workshops. The technician will train students in basic lab procedures, recruit and educate both students and the public on stormwater education in the Puget Sound area, and work with faculty to create course material on stormwater and surface water.
As the Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1, it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.
Employee Type: Part-Time (16 hours per week) Classified, 12 - 18 month Project Position (as grant funding allows)
Initial Salary: $1,398.00 - $1,536 Monthly
Supervising Position: Assistant Director of Sustainable Practices
Essential DutiesInstructional Support
- Direct and supervise student classes of stormwater sampling and monitoring, in on-campus wetland site and in laboratory.
- Prepare and set up equipment and materials for laboratory experiments and field site visits using safety procedures
- Assist/advise students in laboratory assignments or in discipline subject matter; write, edit or modify laboratory handouts or manuals; modify experiments; advise instructors of potential problems- for Stormwater monitoring and testing
- Operate, and perform routine maintenance and repair tasks on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instruct students and work study students in the use of equipment
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student learning
- Determine appropriate disposal method for waste generated in laboratory experiments
Wetland and Stormwater Education and Outreach
- Create outreach materials on wetlands, surface, and stormwater education
- Recruit students from campus for weekly stormwater workshops and classes
- Present quarterly to classes and events interested in stormwater education
- Connect with community partners and organizations for stormwater education, student recruitment, and event tabling
- Connecting with campus and community partners to develop on and off campus opportunities for students
Lab Supplies and Equipment Purchasing
- Order and dispense supplies, equipment and materials; maintain records.
- Evaluate equipment specifications and make purchase recommendations.
- Prepare cost estimates.
Safety
- Understands and follows applicable laws, regulations, and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment
- Coordinating: Accepts responsibility for all aspects of the laboratory coordination including instructional support, equipment purchasing
- Planning: Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to ensure they are accomplished and meet strict deadlines
- Ability to learn and abide by Cascadia College policies and procedures
Other
- May assist in grant proposal preparation: expenditures, preparing reports, etc.
- Participate in campus-wide events as directed.
- Other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate Degree or equivalent education and experience
- Some science lab or class lab experience (minimum of 1 academic term)
- Interest or experience in stormwater or surface water testing and outreach
- Ability to do public speaking and basic outreach workshops and activities
- Demonstrated commitment to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a diverse workplace and educational environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to successfully communicate (written and orally) in a language in addition to English
Terms of Employment
This is a part-time, project Classified position expected to last between 12 ¿ 18 months, depending on grant funding. This position will work 16 hours per week, Monday ¿ Friday; may include occasional evening responsibilities, and may occasionally be asked to work up to 19 hours per week and compensated accordingly. The position is allocated to pay Range 39 under the Higher Education Salary Schedule. Initial salary placement is between the ranges of $1,398.00 - $1,536.00 per month, with yearly step increases to the maximum salary of $1,861.2 (Step M) per month (including the 5% King County Premium Pay). This is a represented position.
This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position by the Washington Public Employees Association. Following a successful probationary/trial service period, employees attain permanent status.
Because this position is expected to work less than 80 hours per month, this position is not eligible for benefits.
