Position Summary  

We are excited to invite applications for the position of Adjunct Interior Design Professor, a dynamic role dedicated to shaping the future of interior design through innovative teaching and industry engagement. Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. 

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $6,232.61 - $7,596.76. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter.

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

Bellevue College offers one of the largest interior design programs in Washington state. Accredited by CIDA, the program provides a strong foundation in fine arts and design, hands-on skill development, and critical thinking. The rigorous curriculum emphasizes diverse methods of design exploration, exposing students to a wide range of interior project types and real-world design challenges. With over 300 full- and part-time students currently enrolled, the program graduates an average of 30 to 50 students each year. Our student body is culturally and academically diverse. Many students work while enrolled, and a significant number are returning to education in response to career or life changes. The program is supported by five full-time faculty members and a talented team of adjunct instructors, all bringing varied academic backgrounds, professional experience, and a strong commitment to student success.

Essential Functions  
  • Design and deliver compelling course content across key interior design topics, including design theory, space planning, sustainable design, and professional practices.
  • Provide high-quality instruction through traditional, digital, and hybrid teaching formats.
  • Utilize advanced pedagogical techniques to create an inclusive, creative, and collaborative learning environment.
  • Offer constructive, timely feedback on student work to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and design development.
  • Develop and maintain course materials aligned with current industry trends, sustainability, and emerging technologies.
  • Ensure curriculum meets the standards of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and evolve professional expectations.
  • Assess student performance through projects, exams, presentations, and portfolios, supporting continuous improvement.
  • Mentor students throughout design processes, from concept development to final presentations.
  • Maintain regular office hours to provide academic and project-related support.
  • Stay current with trends and advancements in interior design through ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty meetings, curriculum reviews, accreditation, and assessment activities.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Bachelor Degree in interior design, architecture or interior architecture from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • 5+ years of professional experience in interior design, architecture or interior architecture.
  • Demonstrated experience in higher education teaching, with a commitment to student success and innovative pedagogical methods.
  • Strong understanding of current design software, tools, and trends in the industry and experience using emerging communication tools for virtual collaboration and online instruction.
  • Project-based expertise in either mixed-use, residential or commercial interior design projects, including project briefs, concept development through visual communication, schematic design, design development including interior construction details and interior FF&E selection and specifications.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Graduate Degree in interior design, architecture or interior architecture or other relevant discipline; preferably from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • NCIDQ certification.
  • LEED-AP accreditation.
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiarity with Canvas for class delivery and grading.
  • Knowledge of building codes, accessibility standards, and sustainable design practices.
  • Familiarity with digital fabrication technologies and their applications in interior design.
  • Familiarity with CIDA standards, NCIDQ certification, and their relevance to interior design education and practice.
  • Active affiliation with professional and/or academic design organizations.
  • Expertise using 3D digital and traditional fabrication tools and processes.
