Description

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston Medical Center / Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is seeking a Vice Chair of Research. The Department is interested in candidates who have a commitment to research excellence, demonstrated leadership, and who are interested in building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. The successful candidate will bring an established research program and work to further the stimulating and collaborative environment within the department. They will collaborate with the Vice Chairs of Clinical Operations, DEI, and Education to optimize and oversee the research activities within our department. The Vice-Chair will provide leadership, strategic direction and administrative operational oversight of the research staff and research programs with a focus on the growth and sustainability of the department's research portfolio. The Vice-Chair of Research will report directly to the Department Chair, serve as a member of the Department's Executive Committee, and will have 20% protected time for the position. Additional protected time for research may be available for qualified candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Chair in the development and implementation of the research strategic plan for the department.
  • Stimulate, engage, foster, and oversee all levels of faculty, staff, fellows/residents, and students interested and/or involved in research.
  • Act as the primary liaison to university and hospital research administrative units including Sponsored Projects Administration, Clinical Trials Office, Research Finance, and the BUMC IRB.
  • Meet regularly with departmental administration for financial updates on all research portfolios within the department to make recommendations to the Chair for corrective actions needed to keep the research operation viable and solvent.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures for department research.
  • With the help of staff, create and maintain the department research page on both BMC and BUCASM websites.
  • Chair the department's Research Committee to foster the success of faculty by offering services such as internal review for projects and grants, leading faculty research development, and mentoring for junior faculty.
  • Administer the department SEED grant program.
  • Coordinate the placement of student volunteers from the medical and public health school with faculty research projects.
  • Work with the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Strategy to integrate clinical research and other scholarly faculty activities in clinical settings.
  • Work with the Vice Chair of Diversity, Education, and Inclusion to advance a department research agenda on health equity and oversee research efforts in the Equity in Pregnancy arm of the BMC Health Equity Accelerator.
  • Coordinate with the director of quality and safety when QI initiatives show promise for publication.
  • In coordination with the Director of Research Operations, maintain oversight of grant budgets and department research staff.
  • Work with the residency research director to ensure that residents find research mentorship and stay on track for their scholarly projects.
  • Take appropriate actions to ensure compliance and maintenance of a safe research environment that is inclusive and free from any form of discrimination or harassment.
  • Represent the Department in committees, task forces, and other functions related to the clinical activities of the Department as assigned by the Chair.
Qualifications:
  • Qualified candidates must have a PhD, MD/PhD, MD or equivalent, or terminal degree in areas of Reproductive Sciences or other health related fields AND be eligible for a Boston University academic appointment at the Associate or Clinical Associate Professor level or higher.
  • Minimum of 5 years of research-related experience.
  • If an MD/DO, board certified in OB/GYN.
  • If an MD/DO, eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Massachusetts.
  • If an MD/DO, eligible for medical staff membership at Boston Medical Center.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Competencies and Skills:
  • Familiarity with NIH and other grant funding systems with a proven track record of extramural funding.
  • History of successful programmatic oversight including demonstrated faculty and investigator mentorship.
  • Excellent communication skills, leadership skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Have at least one current NIH/equivalent funded grant that will be funded through the next two years and/or a sustained record of significant grant funding.
  • High productivity with regards to peer-reviewed publications.
