The Regional Transportation Manager leads safe, reliable, and compliant student transportation services across an assigned region. This role manages school-based transportation coordinators, contracted bus service providers, bus operators, attendants, and administrative staff; oversees routing and scheduling; ensures regulatory compliance (DOT, FMCSA, and state requirements); and serves as the primary liaison among schools, families, contractors, and community stakeholders to support CSUSA's mission.
How You Will Impact Education
- Plan, organize, and supervise regional student transportation operations, including school-based coordinators, bus operators, attendants, and administrative assistants.
- Develop and oversee bus routes, student stop assignments, and driver assignments; maintain a computerized transportation management system.
- Lead recruiting, screening, onboarding, and training of bus operators and attendants; deliver or coordinate classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction for new and renewing operators.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, state, and local requirements, including implementation and oversight of an FMCSA-compliant drug and alcohol testing program.
- Serve as first contact for, and/or review investigations of, bus accidents, incidents, and near misses; report and document per FMCSA and state standards, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Coordinate with school leadership on policies, procedures, field trips, and extracurricular transportation; resolve service concerns from administrators, parents, and staff.
- Act as project manager for transportation start-ups, vendor transitions, and corrective action plans; manage project scope, schedule, budget, and stakeholder communication.
- Monitor vendor performance, track service failures, assess liquidated damages when applicable, and facilitate strong relationships between schools and contractors.
- Establish, track, and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for safety, on-time performance, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance schedules with bus vendors; support annual state inspections and ensure timely corrective repairs.
- Manage operating budgets and monitor expenses related to fuel, maintenance, personnel, and contracts; recommend cost-optimization strategies.
- Maintain accurate records, including training logs, compliance documentation, route databases, and incident reports.
- Model CSUSA's values by communicating proactively and professionally with all stakeholders to support student safety and achievement.
- Bachelor's degree in Management, Business Administration, Education, or related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- 3--5 years of progressively responsible experience in K--12 student transportation, school administration, logistics, or a related field; supervisory experience preferred.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire); Louisiana School Bus Driver Instructor's Certificate within 12 months (as applicable to region/state).
- Demonstrated knowledge of routing and scheduling methods; FMCSA/DOT compliance; school transportation safety standards; and vendor management.
- Proficiency with transportation management systems and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple priorities.
Job Requirements
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings and occasional evenings/weekends aligned to school schedules and special events.
- Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel to schools, vendors, and training sites.
- Successful completion of background check(s) and pre-employment screenings as required by law and CSUSA policy.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Usual office working conditions with frequent school site and bus yard visits, including outdoor exposure during peak arrival and dismissal times.
Physical Demands
- Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
- Ability to travel within or outside of state; ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during site visits and inspections.
FLSA Overtime Category
This job is exempt from the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
