As the Narcotics Clinical Pharmacist, you will organize and manage of all aspects of the Pharmacy Services controlled substance program and ensure compliance with state, federal and Maryland Board of Pharmacy regulations. You will provide direct oversight and accountability for the effective functioning of the inpatient pharmacy-controlled substance inventory at Union Hospital and assure adequate inventory and distribution to meet patient needs. This position is also the primary resource for detecting controlled substance diversion using automated tools and reporting to Pharmacy management any issues that arise with accountability.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate of all activities related to controlled substance inventory management including procurement, receipt, accountability, and distribution
  • Ensure continual compliance with all standards, laws and regulations governing controlled substances
  • Initiate and implement quality assurance programming that enables ongoing compliance and rapid recognition of deviation from required performance
  • Establish and execute audit schedule; escalate findings of concern.
  • Coordinate and execute changes to assist the health system in addressing drug shortages involving controlled substances
  • Assist with the biannual physical inventory by escorting inventory personnel and answering questions
  • Provides direction and guidance to the controlled substance technicians of the department
  • Maintain perpetual electronic inventory of all controlled substances and ensure proper inventory levels
  • Maintain needed controlled substance records, that can be ready for on demand inspection by all regulatory bodies
  • Audit and inspect areas that store controlled substances
  • Maintains knowledge of current and pending regulatory requirements and takes action to ensure compliance
  • Supervise storage, dispensing and record keeping
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations and is a resource person regarding interpretation
  • Serve on the organization's Controlled Substances Accountability sub-committee
  • Assure compliance with the Joint Commission Medication Management/CMS security standards/requirements for controlled substances
  • Conduct training for pharmacists and technicians on controlled substance policies and procedures
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of medication-related concerns
  • Participate in identifying and submitting event reports and providing follow-up assessment
  • Meet with interdepartmental leaders to review controlled substances utilization
  • Facilitate the distribution of controlled substances to off-site practices

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • PharmD or B.S. in Pharmacy required
  • Current licensure or (or eligible to reciprocate) in the State of Maryland
  • At least three years hospital pharmacy experience
