Description

The City of Edmonton's Legal Services Branch is seeking one articling student for the 2025/2026 articling year.

If you are a motivated law student with a keen interest in public sector law, consider working in a dynamic environment along with a team of other lawyers within the Legal Services Branch, who value hard work and a strong work-life balance.

The City of Edmonton's Legal Service Branch acts as a full-service law firm for the City, which employs over 14,000 employees and has a total budget in excess of $3 billion. Virtually all legal work for the City is handled in-house. As an articling student with the City of Edmonton, you will have an opportunity to work in areas such as:

  • Commercial and real estate transactions
  • Finance and investment advising
  • Public-private partnerships
  • Expropriation law
  • Bylaw drafting
  • Intellectual property law
  • Tendering and procurement
  • Corporate structure and governance issues
  • Personal injury litigation
  • Real property litigation
  • Construction litigation
  • Bylaw challenges, enforcement and prosecutions
  • Assessment and taxation
  • Human resources and employment advising/hearings; and
  • Environmental Law

You will have independence and authority to manage your own files and will be encouraged to connect with City departments to gain first-hand knowledge on the work of our business areas. You will also find that the lawyers in the Branch have an open-door policy, and are available to spend time with students to assist and direct them when necessary.

The City will cover the cost of your Alberta Law Society membership, Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) tuition, as well as any time off required to complete PREP modules.

The Legal Services Branch is interested in retaining its students beyond their articling year, however, as with any firm, we cannot guarantee that students will be offered a continuing position at the end of their articling year. In the past, there have typically been opportunities available for qualified students who wished to continue on with the Branch. A number of senior lawyers currently employed by the Legal Services Branch articled with the City.

The City welcomes applications from all interested applicants who will be eligible to commence their articles in the 2025/2026 articling year. Applicants must apply online and include a cover letter, resume, updated law school transcripts, and the names of two references. Applications that are incomplete may not be considered.
