Join a dedicated team within Development Services where your technical expertise ensures the safety and integrity of the buildings that shape our vibrant city. We are looking for a skilled professional to uphold high standards of compliance and safety for residential and commercial structures.

As a Building Safety Code Officer II, you will serve as a fully working plans examiner and inspector, designated for Building Safety Codes Residential, Part 3, and Part 9 structures. You are responsible for administering provincial safety code duties and auditing for compliance with the Safety Codes Act and the National Building Code - Alberta Edition.

What will you do?

• Conduct thorough plans examinations and reviews of permit applications for new constructions and renovations to ensure alignment with bylaws and building codes
• Perform detailed site inspections at various construction stages to verify conformity with approved plans and provincial legislation
• Identify safety code infractions and provide expert technical information to help resolve deficiencies before occupancy is granted
• Issue, withhold, or revoke building permits and maintain accurate records within the POSSE data management system
• Collaborate with internal departments like Fire Rescue Services and Alberta Health Services to coordinate necessary approvals
• Educate community partners, contractors, and developers on safety code requirements and interpretations

Qualifications

• Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade
• One of the following professional backgrounds:
  • Journeyperson certification recognized in Alberta (Carpenter, Plumber/Gasfitter, Electrician, Sheet Metal Worker, Power Steamer Engineer, or Bricklayer) plus 5 years of relevant industry experience post-certification OR
  • Two-year technology diploma in a related field plus 7 years of relevant industry experience post-graduation OR
  • Engineering or Architecture degree recognized in Canada plus 5 years of relevant industry experience (with at least 1 year post-degree).
• 1 year of specific experience in building construction, including best practices and project scheduling
• Certified as a Safety Codes Officer in "Residential," "Part 9," and "Part 3" (Group A Level 3) with the Safety Codes Council in Alberta

Assets:

• Experience processing complex or unusual safety code problems under the guidance of senior officers
• Familiarity with preparing legal agreements for cranes and hoardings

Skills required for success:

• Interpretation of the Safety Codes Act, National Building Code - Alberta Edition, and City Bylaws
• Proficiency in identifying construction that fails to meet code intent or presents hazardous conditions
• Evaluation of structural stability through plan reviews and on-site inspections
• Technical communication for educating community partners on complex code applications
• Service-oriented approach to resolving customer needs with professionalism
• Organization of multiple priorities and projects to meet strict deadlines
• Independent decision-making and initiative within established policies

Conditions of Employment:

• Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
• Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
• Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance

Work Environment:

• Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
• The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
• This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
• Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
• This role requires working in confined spaces and/or at heights
• This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, lifting items up to 50lbs, and climbing ladders requiring physical stamina and resilience

• Approximately April to September: 40 hours per week
• Approximately September to April: 33.75 hours per week

• 40 hours per week: $43.923 - $56.527 (Hourly); $91,711.220 - $118,028.380 (Annually)
• 33.75 hours per week: $49.916 - $62.735 (Hourly); $87,939.510 - $110,523.390 (Annually)
