The City of Edmonton is excited to re-post the Building Safety Codes Officer II opportunity within our compliance enforcement team! We're looking for individuals who thrive working in the field, conducting inspections and code enforcement on a variety of residential and commercial structures and properties, and performing investigations on complaints. Please note: Candidates who have not yet achieved full Building Safety Codes Officer Certification are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a Building Safety Codes Officer I position. Applicants who hold their Safety Codes Officer Certification will be considered at the Building Safety Codes Officer II level.

What will you do?

  • Conduct plans examination and review of permit applications for newly constructed and/or renovated buildings and structures by assessment for compliance with bylaws, building codes, regulations, and other municipal standards
  • Notify applicants of findings by appropriate correspondence and reports
  • Coach applicants to resolve issues related to a particular permit application and follow up on conditions and notices to ensure deficiencies are corrected
  • Create and issue building permits including authority to withhold, suspend, revoke, and extend permits through existing processes. Keep accurate records in POSSE
  • Grant detailed permits for construction to proceed at different stages as per submitted and approved plans
  • Consult with or assist other municipal working units, such as Development Approvals and Service Centre Staff, provincial authorities, or associations on complex information such as discussing code interpretations and applications in order to ensure a cohesive and user-friendly report when permits are granted or with expectations of further corrective actions when permits are not granted
  • Input relevant data, reports, correspondence, and permits into POSSE and other data management systems used by the City
  • Provide signatures on permits for issuance and ensure payment of fees prior to permit issuance
  • Prepare legal agreements for cranes and hoardings (crane swing path and overhead work)
  • Coordinate approvals for other departments including Fire Rescue Services, environmental, IIS, development appeal board, Alberta Health Services, etc.
  • Provide interpretations and information relating to the Building Code, bylaws, or other regulations to the contractors, designers, developers, or citizens, as applicable. Build relationships with builders, applicants, contractors, and other external stakeholders to enhance City reputation and service delivery
