As a Carpenter with Facility Maintenance Services you will engage in the maintenance, repair, alteration and installation of all types of structures. Assignments are usually in the form of work orders and oral instructions and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints. There is latitude for determining specific work methods and the work is performed independently while working closely with other Carpenters, Forepersons and assigned helpers or apprentices.
What will you do?
- Cut, shape and finish materials with hand and power tools such as saw, joiner, planer, router, sander and drill press
- Cut, fit and install glass or plastic in door and window frames and other structures
- Repair, replace and perform preventative maintenance to structural and architectural building components
- Assemble acoustic and thermal insulating materials as well as drywall, plaster, stucco and related materials to walls and ceilings
- Build and erect forms and pouring chutes for concrete; repair roofing surfaces with asphalt, tar, aluminium and wood
- Maintain and repair doors, windows and associated hardware
- Move and install walls, replace ceilings and floors and repair roofs
- Build and repair cupboards, cabinets, and a variety of custom millwork
- Install and repair tile, linoleum, baseboards and other flooring materials
- Perform miscellaneous service work and renovations
- Utilize technology to obtain work order information and record work details into the management system
- Adhere to occupational health, safety and environmental standards and procedures
- Perform other related duties as required
- Certified Journeyman Carpentry (recognized by Government of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology)
- Active employment as a Journeyman Carpenter for the past 5 years and experience working in a maintenance environment are required
Assets:
- Training and experience in the locksmith trade
- Experience in cabinet making and interior partition systems
Skills required for success:
- Considerable knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of all building construction materials, methods, and techniques
- Knowledge of regulatory codes in the carpentry trade and ability to read/interpret blueprints and layout
- Commitment to continual learning, teamwork, and providing excellent customer service
- Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, read, and write English for safety requirements
- Familiarity with the work of related trades
- Visual acuity (near and far) and depth perception
- Sufficient strength to perform medium work requiring frequent lifting of tools and materials weighing up to 100 pounds
- Coordination and manual dexterity to accurately use hand and power tools

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator; compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment is required
- Compliance with safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including steel-toed boots
- Hire is dependent upon an Enhanced Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is required
- Ability to perform physical demands and pass a job-related physical abilities evaluation
Work Environment:
- This role is physically demanding and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, heights, confined spaces, and mechanical/electrical hazards
- The successful candidate must be able to work safely and independently, following all safety protocols
