Help create a safe and vibrant Edmonton! As a Community Safety Liaison (CSL), you'll play a vital role within Community Safety Initiatives as a part of the Neighbourhood Empowerment Team (NET). You will work closely with residents, community groups, transit riders, local businesses, and other partners to develop strategies that address safety concerns and positively impact perceptions of safety in a wide variety of areas including transit and other public spaces. Community Safety Liaisons work is informed by available data, community's needs, and emerging priorities. Currently there are CSLs who work alongside a number of different Edmonton Police Service (EPS) units, in transit with Transit Peace Officers, City Recreation Centres and with neighbourhoods and other groups experiencing safety concerns throughout the city. As a Community Safety Liaison, you will utilize creative problem-solving skills and explore the connections between the built environment, social context, and economic factors that influence safety. You will serve as a bridge between residents, community groups, stakeholders, service providers, City departments, and enforcement partners such as Edmonton Transit Service (ETS), Edmonton Police Service, and Community Peace Officers. Your focus will be on understanding and addressing safety issues, promoting crime and violence prevention, and fostering a sense of security and well-being.

This is a challenging but rewarding position that requires strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach, and a deep understanding of community  dynamics.

What Will You Do?

  • Identify and implement safety programs tailored to an assigned area  ensuring safe and secure experiences for all users and staff
  • Use available data and indicators as well as the lived experiences of Edmontonians to inform projects
  • Collaborate with Enforcement agencies, authorities, and other invested parties to identify safety concerns unique to a variety of public spaces and the experiences of Edmontonians
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community groups, businesses, residents, and other key partners
  • Coordinate with invested parties to address incidents, improve surveillance, and implement environmental design strategies in public areas
  • Employ project management frameworks to plan and oversee initiatives
  • Develop and implement community-driven solutions to safety issues
  • Advise and mentor community groups on safety and crime prevention strategies, including environmental design principles that emphasize social interaction and animation for safe communities
  • Collaborate with Edmonton Police Service and other agencies to address safety concerns
  • Foster partnerships to integrate community resources and enhance service availability for vulnerable populations
  • Implement community safety initiatives using a GBA approach that is citizen-driven
  • Seek to identify, hear and respond to the concerns of equity deserving communities
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and events related to community and transit safety
  • Conduct active outreach to ensure stakeholder participation in consultations, training, meetings, events, and services
  • Bring diverse groups together to identify and achieve common objectives
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other communication materials
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and best practices impacting transit, community safety, vibrancy and wellness
