Parks and Roads Services is responsible for services and assets that support mobility and activity in our city. The branch ensures that roads and the infrastructure assets, parks, trees and boulevards remain accessible, attractive and safe. The work across the branch includes repairs and maintenance, seasonal clean ups, signals and street lights, parking services and traffic safety, just to name a few.
As the Director, Technical and Regulatory Services, you will report directly to the Branch Manager of Parks and Roads Services, operating within a highly integrated business model. This pivotal role is accountable for energizing a safe, functional, and efficient mobility network and open spaces by supporting the assets, systems, and services essential to keeping Edmonton moving forward.
The Director provides comprehensive support and regulatory compliance through the oversight of roadway usage, asset inspection, structural engineering, temporary traffic control, and the ongoing operation and maintenance of signals and lighting. Working at a strategic level with a 3-5 year planning horizon, you will expertly translate the overarching Parks and Roads branch strategy into decisive, functional action. By fostering integration and leading a diverse team of professionals, and by working collaboratively with both internal and external business partners, this Director will meet the increasing demand for regulatory compliance in all engineering work, strategically balancing decentralized operational tasks with centralized strategic work and coordination
What will you do?
- Empower supervisors to proactively develop and implement action plans aimed at improving communication, fostering creative problem-solving, promoting seamless integration and collaboration across teams, and consistently supporting a culture of excellence through human centric leadership
- Provide strong leadership and clear guidance to the team while ensuring the optimal utilization of resources, adherence to established processes and policies, and the effective resolution of issues
- Manage operations and maintenance for traffic signals, roadway and park lighting, and LRT integration to ensure reliable traffic flow and rapid response to outages
- Oversee comprehensive permitting and licensing functions for the city's roadways (e.g. moving permits and utility line assignments) and direct detour and temporary traffic accommodation services
- Establish performance measures, KPIs, and service level agreements for programs using data-driven planning and monitoring
- Oversee the operating and capital budgets, ensuring the prudent and effective use of financial resources and explaining financial variances
- Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
- Integrate multi-disciplinary teams to work collaboratively with business partners to support corporate priorities
- Build new and innovative collaborative partnerships with external agencies, orders of government, community organizations, and internal departments and branches
- Ensure departmental alignment across the organization including active partnerships with planning and development teams and the Integrated Infrastructure Department.
