The City of Edmonton's Parks and Roads team is looking for a dedicated Equipment Operator II to join our Paving Operations and Snow and Ice Control crews. In this role, you will operate a diverse fleet of specialized machinery—from skid steers to sidewalk planers and flushers—to directly maintain the roadways and paths our communities rely on every day. When weather conditions change or machinery isn't required, you will seamlessly shift gears to collaborate with your team on general labour and truck driving tasks. What will you do?

• Operate specialized equipment—including but not limited to MT, skid steers, Toolcat units, flusher trucks, sidewalk planers, concrete saws, crack cutters, combi rollers, and 5-tonne rollers—skillfully and safely with minimal supervision
• Conduct mandatory pre-trip inspections, complete daily equipment check sheets, and perform routine maintenance to ensure all machinery is in top operating condition
• Secure equipment properly for transport and ensure the hauling setup matches site requirements
• Complete critical field documentation, including daily worksheets, logbooks, and Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) for every location and task
• Perform manual snow and ice control, general labour duties, and truck driving as operationally required
• Proactively communicate equipment maintenance needs, site hazards, or public inquiries to your direct supervisor

Qualifications

• Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade or equivalent
• One (1) year of experience operating equipment such as a 5-tonne combi roller, crack cutter, flusher, tack truck, and skid steer

Skills required for success:

• Ability to skillfully operate and maintain a diverse municipal fleet, including but not limited to MT, skid steer, Toolcat units, flusher trucks, sidewalk planers, concrete saws, crack cutters/routers, vacuum machinery, 5-tonne rollers, and tack trucks
• Considerable knowledge of job tasks, rules, and safety practices associated with heavy equipment operation, paired with the physical strength and agility to perform demanding field work
• Ability to respond proactively to unexpected site challenges, such as mechanical breakdowns or material variances, escalating major concerns to the supervisor when necessary
• Exemplary customer service skills when interacting with the public on-site, demonstrating patience, professionalism, and a helpful attitude
• Confidence to evaluate the roadworthiness of assigned equipment on-site, plan routes efficiently, and determine the safest method to complete a task
• Flexibility to adjust to changing operational priorities, shift rotations, and variable weather dependencies
• Ability to understand and precisely carry out oral and written instructions, maintain clear work records, and report field issues or public feedback constructively
• Familiarity with the City of Edmonton's geographic locations and routing
• A deep commitment to a safe work environment, demonstrated by consistently completing FLRAs, following strict OH&S safety standards, and actively reporting incidents or near-misses to remedy issues immediately
• Basic computer skills for email, data entry, and accurate timesheet submission
• Ability to work effectively within a team and follow guidance from Crew Leaders

Conditions of Employment:

• Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement (Q) or higher
• Successful candidates must be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
• Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen, and coveralls
• Possession of current Emergency First Aid, CPR-C, and AED certifications
• Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

• The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
• Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
• This role requires the completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using feet/hand controls requiring physical stamina and resilience
• Availability to work a variety of shifts, which may include nights and/or weekends during the winter Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) program
