Reporting to the Director, Sustainable Waste Processing, the General Supervisor, Organics Processing and Recycling Management provides leadership at the main waste processing sites. This vital role oversees the Compost Cure Site, Organics Tip Floor, and Material Recovery Facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. The General Supervisor is responsible for leading staff, managing contract workers, and ensuring that all equipment and resources are used as effectively as possible to process waste. By maintaining a direct line of communication with the Director, this leader ensures that daily site activities remain perfectly aligned with the strategic goals of the branch.

This leader manages external vendor contracts, develops plans for securing new services through the bidding process, and establishes the long-term operational direction for the processing facilities. The General Supervisor leads a team of approximately ten employees and is crucial for successfully meeting the recycling and organics processing commitments of the City. Efficiency and financial responsibility are paramount, as this individual manages resources to ensure all operations remain sustainable and cost-effective.

  • Coach mentor, and foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture
  • Identify opportunities for individual and collective skill-building to ensure the team is motivated and equipped to deliver results, keeping current with industry practice
  • Lead the development of continuous improvement strategies consistent with corporate direction, vision, and goals
  • Identify trends, issues, and gaps and implement best practices (e.g. benchmark practices to those of other similar industries)
  • Leverage waste inputs to plan and set priorities for personnel, equipment, and maintenance
  • Decide on required staff resources, equipment requirements, and preventative maintenance
  • Provide input into capital budget requirements
  • Evaluate the current assets of the Branch and identify opportunities for cross asset utilization and efficiency
  • Ensure the team is compliant with all City OH&S, Enviso, Corporate, and Branch policies
  • Implement sound contract management and best practices to ensure the City is receiving the appropriate value from contracted services
