Description

This is a defining opportunity to step into a critical leadership role as the General Supervisor, Central Planning Coordination. You will report directly to the Director of Planning Coordination and lead a diverse, multidisciplinary team comprising professional planners, engineers, technicians, and clerks. Your leadership, supervision, and direction are essential for the effective review and delivering recommendations to City Council of land development applications within the city. This position requires an individual who can cultivate a high-performing environment, provide essential guidance and mentorship, and serve as a critical team leader alongside other General Supervisors and the Director.

The General Supervisor will ensure all land development applications are facilitated and decided efficiently and consistently, adhering to the Municipal Government Act, The City Plan, statutory plans, guidelines, and City policies. Beyond regulatory oversight, this position requires the effective management of resources and creative problem solving to deliver results. As a leader within the Planning Coordination team, you will have a critical role at City Council public hearing and committee meetings by providing confident, trusted advice and subject matter expertise to Council as decision-makers.

What will you do?

  • Build and actively nurture relationships and effective networks with internal and external partners to lead a high performing team and implement The City Plan
  • Lead a diverse, multidisciplinary team comprising professional planners, engineers, technicians, and clerks
  • Continuously improve organizational capacity to increase staff knowledge and skill, workplace diversity and expertise
  • Provide operational and strategic direction to the team based on The City Plan, branch and department objectives
  • Direct the preparation, organization, and presentation for all Council public hearings, and supporting the Section as a confident, trusted advisor in the recommendations and justification on applications
  • Work with internal and external partners to improve internal processes and procedures with the goal of improving collaboration and decision making, enhancing partnerships, and encouraging innovation
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns received by Council, Administration, industry representatives, regulatory bodies, other municipalities and Edmontonians within set timelines
  • Build on successful initiatives and relationships to gain understanding and support for ideas
  • Anticipate business opportunities, influence policy, planning and initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability through performance measurement
Qualifications

  • Knowledge, training, and/or experience in Planning, Architecture or a related field
  • Registered Professional Planner (RPP) certification, or the capability to obtain this certification within a specified time frame
  • Related leadership experience in a large, complex organization, including managing multi-disciplinary teams accountable for large, politically sensitive, and complex projects
  • Combinations of education and experience will be considered

Assets:

  • Master's Degree in a related field

Conditions of Employment and Work Environment:

  • 1 permanent, full-time position
  • Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • Salary: (Annually) $123,938.39 - $154,920.88
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
