Description

The City of Edmonton's Community Recreation and Culture branch is seeking a passionate and dedicated Grower to join our horticulture team. This role is vital to providing outstanding plant health care, maintenance, and production support for the Muttart Conservatory's vast and unique plant collections.

Located in the heart of Edmonton, the Muttart Conservatory is an iconic attraction featuring specialized display pyramids and production greenhouses. As a Grower, you will be part of an integrated, fast-paced team working to enhance visitor experiences and maintain beautiful public spaces. What will you do?

  • Monitor and maintain plant health, plant development, and growth habits for various crops and specialized plant collections
  • Execute daily horticulture tasks including watering, fertilizing, propagating, transplanting, pruning, deadheading, and seeding
  • Monitor growing conditions and environmental control systems, managing variables like temperature, light, and humidity
  • Implement integrated pest management programs, identifying nutrient deficiencies or infestations, and applying biological or chemical treatments safely
  • Collaborate with team members to design, construct, and refresh seasonal, themed floral pyramid displays and public-facing features
  • Provide exceptional customer service by answering plant care inquiries and interacting positively with guests, vendors, and community partners
  • Other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Completion of high school supplemented by at least two accredited horticultural courses from a recognized post-secondary institution. One course must cover introductory plant structures, plant identification, and soil science, while the second must focus on plant culture, care, and maintenance
  • A minimum of 2 years of practical greenhouse horticultural experience

Assets:

  • Possession of a formal Diploma in Horticulture
  • Valid Alberta Pesticide Licenses for Greenhouse Production and Indoor Plantscaping

Skills required for success:

  • Deep knowledge of horticultural methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in conservatory and greenhouse plant crop production
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills to successfully meet strict crop production and display deadlines
  • Proven capability to work effectively both as a collaborative team player and independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build positive working relationships with coworkers and the public
  • Demonstrated ability to research plant cultural needs and solve complex greenhouse issues creatively

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Completion of required job level progression training (such as Crop Production, Greenhouse Management, and Pesticide Applicator courses) as dictated by operational needs
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work a schedule that may include shift work, weekends, and holiday coverage
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including hot, cold, humid, dry, or dusty greenhouse and pyramid biomes
  • The role involves light to heavy physical effort, including lifting up to 20 lbs (and occasionally more), climbing ladders, kneeling, and reaching
  • Standing and walking for extended periods, executing heavy lifting, and demonstrating manual dexterity to operate tools
  • Work will involve regular handling of plants, soil media, and exposure to occupational hazards such as the application of pesticides and chemicals while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
