Description

The Landscape Technician I on the Tree Inventory and Assessment Team plays a vital role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the City's spatial tree inventory. This up-to-date data is critical for driving the efficient maintenance operations (planting, pruning, and removal) executed by the Urban Forestry teams. 

This position involves extensive fieldwork, often requiring the incumbent to walk long distances daily in various weather conditions to complete inventory and assessment tasks. The work is physically active and requires a high degree of independence in the field.

Some of the duties you will perform:

  • Accurately collect, update, and maintain spatial and attribute data for the municipal tree inventory using GIS, mobile field applications, and navigation equipment
  • Ensure the tree inventory data is current and reliable, serving as the essential foundation for departmental workflow planning and resource allocation (planting, pruning, and removal programs)
  • Participate in the annual city-wide health assessment program for all City-maintained trees in boulevards and open spaces
  • Systematically identify and mark dead or hazardous trees for removal, ensuring proper documentation within the tree inventory
  • Actively monitor and report any observed signs of significant tree pests or diseases that could impact urban forest health
  • Maintain accurate daily safety records, complete all necessary documentation, and ensure strict adherence to all City and departmental safety policies and ENVISO requirements
  • Respond promptly and professionally to citizen inquiries regarding tree ownership, maintenance responsibilities, and specific concerns, particularly those related to dead trees
  • Communicate City policy and processes regarding tree maintenance, removal, and replacement programs
  • Plan and optimize daily fieldwork routes, prioritizing geographic clusters to minimize travel time and maximize efficiency
  • Operate City vehicles for transport to and from work sites, following all traffic laws and City transportation policies
  • Prepare clear and concise daily activity reports detailing fieldwork progress and findings
  • Perform related work, as required
Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized 2 year diploma program in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Landscape Technology, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in the landscaping/forestry industry

Assets: 

  • Knowledge and experience using GIS software, such as AEGIS (ArcGIS), TreeKeeper or SLIM
  • Experience utilizing GIS and mobile mapping/data collection applications in a fieldwork setting
  • Experience in tree identification, basic tree health assessment, and urban forestry practices
  • International Society of Arboriculture Certification
  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
  • Possession of Standard First Aid and CPR certification

Skills required for Success:

  • Strong knowledge of common urban tree species and basic arboricultural principles
  • Keen attention to detail during data collection and assessment tasks to ensure the highest level of data quality
  • Strong verbal and written communication and customer service skills for effective citizen interaction
  • Ability to establish priorities and effectively multitask
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other Urban Forestry staff to share knowledge, coordinate large-scale assessment efforts, and achieve team objectives
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to project timelines
  • Excellent walking endurance and ability to perform physical tasks required for extensive fieldwork
  • Proficiency in using Google Applications, such as Google Documents, Google Sheets and Google Meets

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen, and coveralls
  • Successful candidates must arrange their own transportation, to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Hours of Work:  40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary Range: $34.315 - $43.102 (Hourly)
