Description

The City of Edmonton is recruiting up to two Senior Accountant - Corporate Accounting & Reporting roles who will lead training development activities within the corporate accounting reporting and policy function, apply strong technical financial training and expertise to support accounting policy research and new standard implementation and enhance corporate financial effectiveness and compliance through continuous improvement initiatives. One role will be responsible for our CPA pre-approved program. In these roles an emphasis is placed on networking and maintaining corporate relationships among various areas within finance, departments and externally to the City.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Plan and effectively manage project teams and projects related to accounting standard implementation and ad hoc research assignments. This includes collecting information and validating facts, performing an analysis of available alternatives, providing recommendations for the appropriate application/interpretation of the standards, communicating findings and providing support through the development of technical accounting memos and/or position papers
  • Lead and/or support the implementation of new accounting policies, city procedures and directives and best practices
  • Motivate staff to high levels of performance, promoting continuous improvement and ensuring a reputation of excellence in service, as well as provide timely and accurate feedback on the work performed
  • Work with outside entities (CPA Canada, CPA Alberta) to maintain the City of Edmonton as an approved training office for the CPA designation. This may include ongoing validation and assessment of CPA competencies to the specific positions in various areas in the City (business financial analytics, corporate accounting, reporting & policy, budget planning & development and internal audit)
  • Manage the City's CPA pre-approved mentor program by being a mentor and/or assisting candidates in finding appropriate mentors
  • Support the implementation of the practical experience program for CPA pre-approved program candidates seeking a designation with the City of Edmonton including the coordination, rotation and evaluation of staff through required competency areas
  • Research and network with other CPA pre-approved employers to establish best practice guidance and ensure the continued establishment of a competitive program
  • Support the Program Leader and experience verification process for professionals choosing to register independently. Work with candidate supervisors to ensure experience is accurately and consistently reported for experience verification candidates within the City of Edmonton
  • Plan and effectively manage teams and projects related to training, accounting standard implementation and ad hoc research assignments
  • Provide guidance and direction to other finance staff on course development and delivery, including best practice teaching and delivery techniques, feedback on course content, etc
  • Facilitate, develop and support the design and implementation of an on-going training curriculum that provides required accounting and technical training for each level of accounting staff at an appropriate technical level
  • Preparation and/or review of year-end and soft close consolidated working papers including consolidation of external entities at year-end, analysis of complex events/transactions and related note disclosures in accordance with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and other year-end duties as requested
