Description

We are looking for a creative, strategic, and highly organized Social Media Specialist to bring the Edmonton Public Library's (EPL) voice to life online. In this role, you will shape how one of Edmonton's most trusted and beloved institutions connects with people digitally. If you believe social media can spark conversations and strengthen communities, we want to hear from you.

Social media is one of the most important ways our community engages with EPL. It's where we share the stories behind our programs, showcase what the Library has to offer, and highlight our impact across the city. Working closely with the Marketing and Communications team, the Social Media Specialist leads the planning and execution of EPL's social presence. In this role, you will create compelling content, manage day-to-day activity across platforms, and ensure social media supports major campaigns and initiatives.

This role is ideal for someone who is curious, quick to spot opportunities, and able to think strategically while producing engaging content. EPL's social channels are known for their creativity and occasionally quirky personality. The successful candidate brings strong storytelling instincts, sound editorial judgment, and a deep understanding of how social platforms work, translating ideas, trends, and everyday library moments into content that resonates.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Execute EPL's social media strategy, defining channel roles, audiences, and content pillars that support organizational priorities, brand goals, and community engagement.
  • Plan, create, and publish engaging content across platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Develop original copy, graphics, and short-form video, collaborating with designers and multimedia specialists on the Marketing and Communications team when needed. Ensure all content reflects EPL's brand voice.
  • Integrate social media into broader marketing and communications campaigns and initiatives, including thought leadership content for LinkedIn.
  • Own and manage EPL's social media content calendar, proactively sourcing and prioritizing content and ideas from across the organization and relevant external sources, while remaining flexible to respond to timely opportunities.
  • Manage day-to-day community engagement, responding to comments, messages, and inquiries while fostering positive conversations with EPL's online community.
  • Keep a close pulse on social media trends, local news, and cultural moments to identify timely opportunities and help EPL participate in relevant conversations as needed.
  • Monitor social media conversations for emerging issues, media interest, or reputational risks, supporting proactive and reactive communications as needed.
  • Track performance, analyze results, and refine content and strategy based on insights, including paid social campaigns when appropriate.
  • Participate in shared after-hours coverage for social media monitoring and response to emerging issues.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of experience developing and executing social media strategies and digital content for brands or organizations.
  • Strong understanding of major social media platforms and how content should be adapted for each.
  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging social media content, including copy, graphics, photos, and short-form video.
  • Exceptional writing, storytelling, and editorial judgment, with the ability to identify timely opportunities and prioritize what matters most.
  • Analytical mindset with experience interpreting social media data to inform strategy and refine content.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to contribute to issues and crisis communications with sound judgment, professionalism, and a collaborative approach.
  • Experience using social media management and planning tools (e.g. Sprout Social, Trello) is required.
