As the Team Leader for Mowing & Trimming and Active Pathways, you will serve as a vital link between operational planning and field execution. From April to October, you will lead crews in the Parks & Urban Forestry group, focusing on mowing and trimming grass across city parkland. When the seasons shift to winter, you will transition to the Mobility Infrastructure Services group to oversee snow and ice control for a variety of inventory including bikelanes, parking lots, sidewalks, and bus stops. You will be responsible for supervising three to five Crew Leaders, managing work plans, and ensuring all tasks meet our high service level standards. This role requires a blend of administrative oversight, including budget monitoring, and active field leadership to ensure safety and quality. What will you do?

  • Lead, coach, and mentor field crews and Crew Leaders to ensure successful delivery of seasonal work plans
  • Coordinate the training, scheduling, and deployment of personnel in compliance with safety standards and operational procedures
  • Oversee the maintenance and inventory of turf and active pathway assets, ensuring quality control through regular field inspections
  • Manage administrative tasks including budget reporting, workforce planning, and the use of software like SAP and ArcGIS
  • Respond to inquiries from community partners and collaborators, ensuring professional and timely resolution of on-site needs
  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and performance evaluation of both permanent and seasonal staff
Qualifications

  • Completion of a University Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Business, Sociology, or a related field
  • Three (3) years of work experience within parks maintenance, construction, or operations
  • Two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity

Skills required for success:

  • Skilled at assigning tasks to Crew Leaders, setting clear performance expectations, and overseeing the training and deployment of personnel to ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective delivery of work
  • Committed to promoting a safe work environment by ensuring compliance with OH&S legislation and City Standards, maintaining safety training records, and conducting WCB or incident investigations
  • Natural ability to mentor and coach staff to foster a culture of professional growth, development, and excellence
  • Capable of managing reactive work and emergent situations, such as tournament field preparation or weather-dependent route adjustments, with independent judgment
  • Ability to assist in budget planning, analyze financial reports, manage inventory, and exercise cost-control measures to align expenditures with approved budgets
  • Proven ability to plan and implement seasonal work plans for mowing, trimming, and snow removal while setting daily and weekly priorities to meet approved work standards
  • Mediate and resolve interpersonal challenges within crews to maintain a positive and productive work environment
  • Lead regular 'toolbox talks' and safety meetings to ensure a proactive safety culture is maintained at the field level
  • Strong capacity to manage inquiries from community partners, schools, and city officials (including 311 and Council requests) with professional advice and proactive remediation plans
  • Identify and implement innovative maintenance techniques to increase operational efficiency and environmental sustainability
  • Experience working within a unionized environment and interpreting collective agreements
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets), SAP, ArcGIS, LMS, or SDMS

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
  • Possession of Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Environment:

  • This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 20 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
