The City of Edmonton is seeking a detail-oriented, technically minded professional to join our Traffic Operations team as a Transportation Technician II. In this role, you will play a vital part in ensuring our city's streets remain safe and efficient by supporting the design and execution of our capital and operating traffic signal programs.
As a Transportation Technician II, your primary purpose is to create designs and assist with the execution of the annual traffic signal, control device, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) programs. You will be responsible for translating functional requirements into robust database configurations and drafting precise technical plans using specialized software. Beyond design, you will monitor construction and coordinate with contractors to ensure the City of Edmonton's construction standards are met. This role involves significant asset management, including maintaining meticulous records of inventory and as-built documentation. Ultimately, your work directly supports public safety and the smooth flow of traffic for all community members.
What will you do?
- Develop, design and draft final signal layout plans by using drafting software, ensuring conformity with TAC guidelines, IMSA and City practices
- Complete traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation Systems layouts, ensuring conformity with TAC and City guidelines, and update as-built records using drafting software
- Review plan circulations and prepare traffic signal conceptual cost estimates
- Perform field checks and collect field data
- Coordinate, direct and inspect the work of contractors, including: identifying and marking locations of new signal equipment and infrastructure, monitoring construction progress, resolving unforeseen issues, ensuring installations are in accordance with plans and standards, collecting field measurements and notes for the as-built recording, commissioning and inspecting installations
- Complete administrative activities required to issue projects for the annual signals programs for construction
- Communicate with a variety of groups regarding signal projects, including internal staff, various contractors, consultants, developers, surveyors and other utility groups
