Attorneys in this Unit bring lawsuits on behalf of the City.  They serve as strategists and litigation counsel addressing public health concerns, predatory business practices, and civil rights matters that affect the people of the City of St. Louis as well as direct harms to and the constitutionality of laws impacting the City of St. Louis itself.  

 

About Us:  The City Counselor's Office is the Civil Law Department for the City of St. Louis.  It houses more than 50 lawyers and 20 support staff.  The City Counselor serves as chief counsel to elected City officials, City boards and commission, as well as City departments and agencies – including the St. Louis Development Corporation, the Metropolitan Police Department, and St. Louis Lambert International Airport ©2021.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • This attorney must possess significant civil litigation experience.
  • Read, review, and prepare highly complex legal documents of all types and provide legal advice in connection therewith.
  • Attend and appear before administrative agencies and state and federal courts.
  • Lead hearings, trials, and appearances before the above-mentioned bodies. Such preparation includes, but is not limited to drafting and reviewing briefs, motions, legal memoranda, and pleadings; attending, taking, and defending depositions: and drafting and responding to discovery; interviewing clients and other witnesses.
