Job Description

*This is a grant-funded non-tenure track position that ends in June 2025.

*This position will be open until filled. For full consideration, all application related materials should be submitted by April 14,2024. Application review will begin April 15, 2024.

The Temporary Instructor, Computer Science/Cybersecurity will be responsible for developing and teaching software development and/or Cyber Security courses. A full-time faculty member will teach in multiple modalities both in-person classroom instruction and online to include synchronous live online meetings with a class once or twice a week or asynchronous and provide video lectures, threaded discussions, and regular contact with students to motivate them to complete their course of study. The instructor will work with Program Directors and faculty to continually update courses, certificates, and various CIT degrees. The instructor will provide student outreach activities in collaboration with CIT department faculty. Work with CIT advisory committee to ensure local IT industry professionals are providing feedback and advice to CSN to improve and enhance programs. Regular contact with IT industry professionals to ensure a pipeline of guest speakers and internship opportunities are available to CIT students. Instructor is expected to participate in college and department committee assignments and work at college events as needed. CIT faculty/instructors are expected to provide advice and guidance to students seeking career and academic advice related to the Information Technology field.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare and teach beginning, advanced computer science, digital literacy, or Cybersecurity courses.

  • May teach courses in systems analysis and design, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science.

  • May teach digital literacy classes in information management system that include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Prepare and teach courses to a diverse and multicultural student population based on established Student Learning Outcomes (SLO).

  • Apply a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of the student population and standards of the discipline.

  • Support the mission of the College and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).

  • Support the expansion of courses, programs, and mission of College and NSHE system. 

  • Participate in the process of establishing benchmarks for institutional assessment and evaluation.

  • Participate in college and departmental responsibilities including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level.

  • Participate in committees, councils, work groups, community service activities, task forces, and professional development.

  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear and timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.

  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.

  • Support the college, school, and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge of the Computing and Information Technology discipline.

  • A commitment to establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with students, colleagues, leadership, and staff of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Experience using technology as an instructional aid where appropriate to enhance student learning.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, online teaching, and multiple campus teaching assignments that may vary by semester. Teaching ground classes at a local campus location is mandatory.

  • Understanding the role of community college faculty in promoting equity, equality, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, major or minor in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate or doctorate degree in computer science, technical emphasis such as Business Technology Education, Computer Information Systems, Engineering, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Industry certifications such as Cybersecurity, Java, Oracle, DevOps, and Cloud Development, or certifications in related computing fields.

  • 2 years of industry experience in the areas of Cybersecurity, Information Systems development, and software development.

  • 1 year experience teaching college level courses in the field of Information technology including areas such as high-level programming languages, computer science, project management, networking, and Cybersecurity.

  • Experience working with a diverse/multicultural student body and/or workforce.

  • At least 18 graduate credits in programming or Information Technology

  • Experience teaching course content using a learning management system (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Angel).

  • Ability to create and teach new courses.

  • Ability to collaborate with other faculty in redesigning courses.

  • An understanding of community college environment, its students, and its mission.

  • Evidence of professional development and service, proportional to experience.

Starting Salary Range:

*Position is contingent upon ongoing and available funding.

Initial salary placement is based on educational level and total years of full-time equivalent teaching experience. For example, for an instructor with a Master's degree the salary range would be $46,691 to $58,364 annually. The entire salary range is up to $71,723 annually with a Doctorate and 10 years' experience. A maximum of 10 years of experience will be considered for the initial salary placement purposes. *
