Summary The Orlando VAMC is looking for Nursing Assistant Surgery Services to work for Nursing Service at the Lake Baldwin Ambulatory Surgery Center. This Nursing Assistant functions as a member of the nursing care team assisting licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents providing other areas of care. Responsibilities The Nursing Assistant - Operating Room is responsible to perform direct and indirect patient care skills under the supervision of the RN staff. This position is located at the Nursing, Perioperative and reports to the Operation Room Nurse Manager or designee. This position is located at the Lake Baldwin OPC, address, 5201 Raymond Street. Orlando, FL 32803. The Nursing Assistant - Operating Room functions as a member of the nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in the care of Veterans receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other Veterans who are in acute, sub-acute, or chronic states of illness. Veteran assignments involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. Plans, organizes, and prioritizes assigned workload. Cares for Veterans in accordance with established nursing procedures, standards of care, principles of cultural transformation, and the plan for care with self-direction and minimal supervision. Assists providers and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations or procedures such as vital sign monitoring, obtaining weight and height, preparing/positioning Veterans. Demonstrates ability to properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as glucometer test for blood glucose level, EKGs, bladder scanning, collection of urine samples, MRSA swabs, sputum, and stool. Delivers samples to lab and picks up blood products from the blood bank. The Nursing Assistant - Operating Room assists with specific health teaching, such as reminding diabetic patients/residents of the importance for skincare and following a diet, reinforcing the importance of exercise and diet for the cardiac patients/residents etc. Encourages patients/residents in self-care activities within their individual capacities as outlined on their care plan. Performs a complete range of patient care related to urinary and bowel elimination, feeding, oral intake, oxygenation, and other duties as assigned by the RN after competency has been demonstrated. The duties for the Nursing Assistant - Operating Room include but not limited to: Performs treatments such as foot soaks and tie application of non-prescribed topical lotions. Collects and labels specimens (urine, stool, and sputum). Delivers specimens to the laboratory section of the facility. Measures and records intake and output. Assists by positioning and draping as well as emotionally supporting patients/residents during a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures. Reports the condition of wounds and skin and any reaction to or results of treatment. Enters specific information into the patients'/residents' Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Enters information regarding the care rendered and the condition and progress of the Veteran. Performs direct support work including personal patien resident care and/or basic education. Able to observe Veterans' physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the Veteran. Takes care of Veterans' routine care and comfort needs for psycho/social/spiritual well-being, personal hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, rehabilitation, safety, etc. Maintains a clean, safe, environment of care that is conducive to Veteran privacy and rehabilitation. Reinforces with patients/residents and family members the necessity to continue the procedures of proper health care. Records basic data and patient responses, reporting significant changes to the RN. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grandfathering Provisions: All NAs employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.
