**Primary Function/General Purpose of Position**

The Operating Room Registered Nurse Specialty Coordinator provides direct and indirect patient care in surgical specialties of General, Gynecologic, Orthopedic, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgical, Plastic, Oral, Vascular, Thoracic, Urological, and Cardiac utilizing the nursing process and current clinical knowledge to provide professional nursing care for all patients in the surgical unit. Collaborating with health team members to coordinate patient care, anticipate the outcomes of nursing interventions, and set criteria for the quality of patient care. Participates in scheduling, budget, counseling and other unit management activities including supervision of staff as needed and assumes an increasing leadership responsibility for professional practice in the unit.

**Essential Job Functions**

Demonstrates a caring attitude and displays compassionate behaviors in all interactions with patients and their families.

Provides direct patient care as required, with respect to individual spiritual and cultural needs. Performing circulating and scrub nurse duties efficiently and effectively. On call for emergencies and available for additional duty

Accurately assesses the patient, develops a plan of care that meets individual patient needs and follows established nursing standards of care/practice and applicable hospital/departmental policies and procedures

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit

Positions patients, provides protection of pressure points, keeps body parts in proper alignment and modifies positioning to reduce potential injury

Interprets assessment data reflective of the patient's status

Verifies surgeon, identifies the patient and operative site. Ensures informed consent and History and Physical are complete and present according to policy guidelines. Initiates and/or actively participates in the Universal Protocol procedures that assure correct site surgery. Responsible for the performance and maintenance of sponges, instruments and sharps counts

Follows established policies and procedures

Completes documentation as required

Prepares, handles, and documents specimens according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures

Delivers medication according to policy, identifies and views medication label concurrently with the scrub person and ensures all solutions in all containers are labeled

Identifies unsafe patient care practices and employs measures for intervention

Protects patient information based on hospital policy and government regulations to assure information is kept confidential

Participates in unit and hospital efforts to reduce adverse employee or patient care events

Demonstrates understanding and integration of The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals into nursing practice

Clearly communicates all pertinent patient information to other members of the health care team, including but not limited to effective patient hand-offs. Anticipates the needs of the patient and/or case during the hand-off

Conducts employee counseling and performance reviews

Monitors supplies and maintains equipment for the specialty. May be responsible for special orders

Advises, directs, and engages team members in the selection and preparation of routine supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures. Notifies circulator of missing or malfunctioning instruments and any of suspect sterility. Provides and anticipates the needs and requests of the surgeon. Ensures that appropriate instrumentation and supplies are readily available in the room or on the sterile field

Provides support for new initiatives and assists with positive change management by adapting to the demands of the situation

Supports surgical service's efforts to exceed patient satisfaction rates for the individual facility, consistently using scripted language that promotes excellent patient satisfaction responses

Supports efforts to exceed targets for employee engagement, recruitment, and retention for the individual facility

Maintains medical records and documentation consistent with hospital policy, JCAHO, state, and federal regulations

Participates in relevant quality improvement activities. Achieves nursing outcomes that consistently meet or exceed generally accepted clinical standards for the nursing discipline

Maintains preference list of physicians and procedures. Reviews individual, unit and specialty data for all dimensions of performance and applies this data to continually improve patient care activities

Advises, precepts, and teaches staff. Serves as intra-facility resource for unit Inservice educational needs. Identifies opportunities for improvement in the areas of cost, quality, and service

Actively supports the professional practice model and participates in efforts related to key foundational elements

Advocates on behalf of patient/family to connect them with appropriate resources to meet identified needs and address concerns

Demonstrates awareness of clinical and administrative resources and uses them appropriately in meeting patient/family or coworker needs

Participates in nursing shared governance activities at the unit/division level to improve patient care and clinical outcomes (i. e. JCAHO compliance, performance improvement, safety)

Demonstrates ability to manage the Daily Surgery Schedule as required. Responsible for daily assignments of specialty team members. Coordinates care delivery to achieve optimal patient outcomes and physician satisfaction

Evaluates procedures, policies, and equipment for compatibility with current technology and research. Assists in developing and revising policies and procedures at the unit and departmental level
