General Summary:

The Senior Director of Construction provides strategic, tactical, and team leadership for the field construction team that is responsible for delivering over 1000 store openings annually.  The Senior Director leads the extensive daily operations and establishes the required strategies and execution standards for pipeline management and construction execution to ensure delivery of monthly opening forecasts and consistent operating cadence across the geographically-dispersed team.  The Senior Director also provides functional expertise in the home office for cross-department collaboration and in support of numerous company initiatives.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coach and support professional team of Directors, Sr. PMs and PMs through daily planning and operations of construction management to include developing and verifying proper execution of success routines and construction administration, ensuring delivery of projects per “TCQ” (time, cost, quality) standards, supporting timely issue resolution, maintaining a strong developer and contractor base, establishing proper organization design and balanced team workload, and building overall team member capability.
  • Lead the national daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly pipeline planning, management, and forecasting processes to include dashboard forecasting, project progress reporting, risk profile flag status, accurate completion dates, and attention to project level detail to anticipate/resolve issues and ensure timely store openings.  Serves as planning and communication lead on pipeline status across the DG organization for current year openings and next year pipeline building.
  • Provides strategic, functional, technical, and program management expertise for the construction portion of the store development process to include work flow definition, standards and specification documentation, stakeholder coordination, organization infrastructure and capability building, administrative management, daily operational execution, and project closeout.  Partners closely with Sr. Director of A&E/Construction Operations, Sr. Dir of Construction Operations, and Director of Remodels on strategic planning and process development.
  • Provide leadership, coordination, and communication role with all stakeholders involved on projects to include Real Estate, A&E, Construction Operations, Store Operations, Store Planning, Store Services, Developers/GCs, Architects/Engineers, Code officials, Landlords, and other DG functional partners.  Leverage continuous communication to choreograph project execution and resolve site specific issues.
  • Serve as construction functional expert within home office and department in support of numerous company initiatives aimed at driving cost-effective incremental growth and brand building. Initiatives include New States, Fee Development, DG Market and Plus, value engineering, and sustainable building design. Senior Director involvement includes planning, designing, and executing initiatives to include all pre and post construction activities 
Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven technical skills and detailed knowledge of construction industry, terminology, codes, and design disciplines, as well as the strong ability to write, read, interpret, understand, and apply construction standards and specifications.
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills to build alignment, commitment, and accountability for delivering results.  Also, the ability to coach, support, and build capability based on individual team member needs.  
  • Ability to provide strategic thought leadership to organization planning needs and long term goals.
  • Strong project management skills to effectively drive the pipeline and consistently deliver predictable results.
  • Proven tactical and thought leadership for dealing with complex and challenging business situations solved through fact-gathering, innovation, and sound decision-making.
  • Professional interpersonal and high impact influence skills resulting in an ability to effectively communicate, coordinate, align, and partner with a diverse set of internal and external project stakeholders at all different levels within the organization.
  • Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of the customer and deliver outstanding service balanced with functional expertise.
  • Ability to provide strategic thought leadership for organization and functional planning, design, and execution.

Work Experience and/or Education:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent combination of education/technical training and experience with 15 years of additional work experience in design, construction, and/or construction management.  At least 7-10 years experience in leading team of professionals.  Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software and working knowledge of Manage Path or equivalent project management tools.
