Job Summary:  The Medical Secretary of the Laboratory maintains effective records and administration of the pathology office by transcribing and distributing pathology reports and slides.

Hours: Tues - Sat/11am - 7pm

 

Job Essentials: 

  • Prior clerical, administrative or secretarial experience in a laboratory setting highly preferred. 
  • Performs transcription using dictation equipment. 
  • Type's transcription into the pathology computer system.
  • Maintains diagnosis record file. 
  • Keeps track of pathology files. 
  • Type's correspondence for department and pathologists.
  • Answers physician inquiries for pathology diagnoses promptly.
  • Signs out slides to patients for “second opinions".
  • Maintains file and audit log on signed-out slides.  Collects service fee receipt for slide sign-out.
  • Responsible for laboratory manual charge entry.
  • Answers telephone calls for pathology and other department offices using excellent phone etiquette. Transfers calls and/or takes messages for department managers and pathologists. 
  • Displays a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all members of the staff and extended community and nurtures same in staff.
  • Maintains high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments and co-workers. Maintains confidentiality.  
  • Performs other duties as requested.

 

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year specialized secretarial training with emphasis on medical terminology.
  • Basic knowledge of personal computers.
  • Able to type 50-60 words per minute.
