Gonzaga University's Office of Sponsored Research and Programs is seeking a Senior Grants and Research Compliance Officer to join a team that provides support services to faculty and staff that include all facets of research administration, from conducting funding searches to ideation through proposal submission. This position will support faculty and staff across the university with particular emphasis in the Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences, as well as the University of Washington — Gonzaga University Health Partnership.
This position will report to the Director of Sponsored Research and Programs and is responsible for the management of a comprehensive pre- and post-award portfolio. This includes developing and reviewing applications, conducting ongoing compliance review to ensure accountability to sponsors, and submitting grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements to foundations, corporations, and government agencies to support research, fellowships, instructional activities, and service programs.

Working in collaboration with faculty, deans, finance, and other relevant stakeholders, this position is a key resource when identifying and resolving issues that arise throughout the life cycle of an award. This position will serve as the primary point of contact for communication with faculty, university departments, and sponsors, encouraging collaboration while delivering a high level of customer service and well-rounded support.

A significant portion of the position will be to engage, support, and assist faculty in the discovery of grant opportunities and proposal development. The Senior Grants and Research Compliance Officer will be involved in faculty professional development and will provide training, information, and guidance to faculty at all career stages, including mentoring faculty through the entire research development process.

This position is integral to reaching strategic research-focused goals for Gonzaga University.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position is $86,870 – $100,000 annually. The internal full salary range is $86,870– $117,530.

Essential Functions

  • Guide faculty and staff – Principal Investigators (PIs) – in the search for funding opportunities, development and preparation of research proposal submissions, contracts, agreements, and subcontracts.
  • Manage all pre- and post-award submission activities.
  • Mentor faculty through the entire grant proposal development process, including proposal review and revision.
  • Responsible for all pre-award activities including compliance review of relevant regulations, proposal guidelines and award Terms and Conditions.
  • Review, negotiate or reject awards as appropriate.
  • Manage a complex portfolio, including financial and technical reporting requirements, risk mitigation, problem resolution, etc.
  • Provide guidance on all sponsored research issues, taking a proactive approach.
  • Review financial and technical reporting requirements.
  • Provide high-level oversight of sponsored research, including reporting and reconciliation.
  • Collaborate with other university departments to manage award life cycle (ideation, pre-award, negotiation, post-award, award close-out).
  • Ensure a compliant research environment and oversee key functions related to research integrity, responsible conduct of research, and conflict of interest research compliance programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies, and operating agreements. This includes monitoring, implementing, and enforcing federal, state and local policies including the U.S. Office of Management and Budget's Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200 and Federal Acquisition Regulations to ensure compliance of proposal and awards in the form of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts.
  • Formulate, implement, and maintain research compliance programs in accordance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations and University policies.
  • Interpret regulations and guidelines of program funding for complex grants and contracts.
  • Conduct routine audits to ensure research is conducted in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Assist PIs with non-financial report submissions, as necessary.
  • Ensure annual subrecipient monitoring is completed and reviewed with PIs.
  • Identify, analyze, and evaluate contractual compliance issues as they arise. Resolve or facilitate resolution of compliance-related problems among constituencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration


Other Functions

  • Provide functional direction and training to junior Grant and Contract Officers.
  • Act as the operational liaison for all verbal and written communication between faculty, university departments, sponsors, and other agencies as necessary, ensuring compliance.
  • Be cross-trained, providing back-up for others in the Department.
  • Serve as institutional official for all grant and contract submissions on behalf of Director, serving as back-up in their absence.
  • In conjunction with Director, develop internal policies and procedures, with the goal of creating an increasingly effective customer service experience.
  • Attend meetings, training, and conferences to support the essential functions of the position.
  • Promote the Office of Sponsored Research and Program's mission to provide superior research administrative management focusing on high levels of customer service, collaboration and interaction. Minimum Qualifications

  • Eight (8) + years of professional experience with sponsored projects administration, five (5) or more of which are in an academic (college/university/hospital) setting.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred. Will consider relevant work experience in lieu of degree.
  • As a consultant and mentor, qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate the following competencies: a) exemplary written and verbal communication skills; b) building and maintaining professional networks; c) building customer (constituency) loyalty; d) professional and effective influencing skills; e) budget development skills.
  • Proficiency using common office software, including Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with pre-award file management and data management systems or other relational databases
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of pre-award and post-award administration (compliance, budget development, expense forecasting, submission, and financial reporting).
  • Demonstrated experience with training or instruction.
  • Experience in electronic submissions using the online portals of foundations and federal agencies, as well as system-to-system (S2S) software used to facilitate electronic submissions.
  • Familiarity required with a range of grant information sources including Grants.gov, the Foundation Directory, and Pivot.
  • Ability to make timely decisions, especially in difficult situations, and communicate them professionally and diplomatically to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate new ideas into practice.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities, and self-prioritize in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build cordial working relationships within the institution, especially with faculty members, and effective partnerships with external collaborators.


Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in the Sciences, Engineering or Health Sciences strongly preferred
  • Experience serving as an Authorized Organizational Representative (allowed to submit grants)
  • Certified Research Administrator certificate
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in research, specifically related to research within their cluster of disciplines and those related to fostering interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with pre- and post-award responsibilities
  • Experience with grant management software and database management
