Description

HOK is hiring a Regional Leader of Sports + Recreation + Entertainment (SRE) in our Kansas City studio.  We are looking for a professional experienced in the planning, design and implementation of Sports + Recreation + Entertainment projects. The role is responsible for winning new commissions, leading project team as Principal-in-Charge, business development, project design/delivery, client relations, financial management and staff development.  The position will assist in developing and executing regional strategies.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Conducts research and seeks thorough understanding of client needs for planning requirements and design solution opportunities.
  • Engages clients in explorations that respectfully challenge their understanding of appropriate design solutions.
  • Communicates design intent in a clear and compelling way; demonstrates the incorporation of client's requirements and goals within design solution.
  • Assists in the preparation and delivery of design presentations to clients and drives consultant work to achieve design goals.
  • Fulfills the firm-wide Regional Market Leader criteria:

    • Can lead teams as Principal-in-Charge
    • Participates in Market leadership
    • Participates in Regional Practice Leadership Group
  • Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.

Management

  • Provides day-to-day administration of the SRE regional practice.
  • Responsible for assisting in the development and successful execution of practice goals, business plan and profitability; aligns efforts with regional and national business unit plans and goals.
  • Responsible for conceptual design excellence; initiates project design concepts and idea discussions, provides guidance to design teams during project design development.
  • Serves as Principal-In-Charge and/or Project Manager for one or more projects.
  • Responsible for SRE regional projects.
  • Supervises and may assist with the production of drawings and documents that convey the design intent.
  • Implements and utilizes HOK Standards for all projects and processes. Personally contributes to HOK Standards through new procedure initiation and development.
  • Assists in preparing fee and workload projections for assigned projects.
  • Works closely with project managers with respect to budget and schedule constraints.
  • Utilizes and encourages best uses of design technology for presentation and production purposes; champions BIM and Revit technologies.
  • Assists others with project deadlines as available.
  • Maintains an appropriate billable and non-billable percentage of personal and departmental time.
  • Conducts project technical and design review.

Staff Development

  • Acts as mentor by coaching and motivating design teams and individuals; fostering an environment of mutual respect and trust among members of the group as it grows and develops.
  • Prepares and delivers staff evaluations; contributes to performance development, compensation decision-making and allocation processes of department.
  • Supports diversity, internal HOK development programs and develops continuing education opportunities (e.g. site visits, lectures, road trips) to expose design staff to influences which will stimulate design creativity and innovation.
  • Participates in interviews and recruiting of professional staff.
  • Encourages staff exploration and innovation to achieve design excellence and continual improvement.
  • Participates in local or state professional associations, maintains active membership, and attends conferences valued by clients as appropriate. Public speaking may be required.
  • May participate with other SRE Regional Leaders and Directors of SRE in HOK firmwide activities.
  • Takes personal responsibility for fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.

Business Development

  • Responsible for the development and execution of the regional business unit's SRE practice marketing strategy; assists with the overall branding and development of HOK's SRE national practice.
  • Identifies new business opportunities while developing current client relationships. Listens for and seeks out new projects which may exist or are being formulated.
  • Participates in selected marketing and business development opportunities and presentations.
  • Develops and nurtures positive client relationships.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with consultants, contractors and jurisdictional/approval agencies to increase stature in the market and community resulting in increased potential business opportunities.
  • Strategizes and assists marketing department in development of marketing campaigns, materials, webinars, etc. and overall proposal preparation.
  • Assists in preparation of award submittals.
  • Assists in the preparation of press releases and other public relations materials publicizing SRE projects.
  • Utilizes speaking and writing opportunities to help position the firm as a thought leader.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or equivalent in education or experience required. Master's degree preferred.
  • 10 years of sports and recreation experience, with at least 5 years in a management/leadership role.
  • Published and/or award winning projects a plus.
  • Licensed Architect with current registration in your region required, if licensure is offered in your region.
  • NCARB registration preferred.
  • LEED credential required within 6 months of employment.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrates significant talent in programming/planning, design development and project leadership for large-scale projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of Sports, Recreation and Entertainment planning and design. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Sports, Recreation and Entertainment infrastructure and facilities design. 
  • Ability to manage with a collaborative leadership style which puts value on relationships, both internal and external.
  • Ability to think strategically, implement change, enforce policy and resolve conflict.
  • Thorough understanding of project work plans, schedules, staffing, budgets.
  • Proven ability to prioritize oneself and the work of others in order to meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients.
  • Proven ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with external clients.
  • Proven ability to masterfully present, effectively sell and negotiate the services of HOK.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines.
  • Knowledge of buildingSMART, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Delivery (IDP).

OTHER:

  • Travel may be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
