Kamehameha Schools is currently hiring for a Director of Student Health Services to manage health services for all KS campuses across the pae ‘aina (3 K-12 campuses and 30+ preschools).  In our environment Heath Services encompasses medical health, behavioral health and athletic health.

Our ideal candidate will be at a minimum, an APRN-Rx with 10+ years of experience within larger healthcare organizations.  Medical management and experience leading larger teams is also required.

Our targeted salary range is $210 – 240k.

This position is based out of our Kapālama Campus.

Job Summary

Medical and public health expert that serves as medical consultant to other departments on matters requiring medical expertise and as Kamehameha Schools(KS) public health liaison to the Department of Health.  Oversees all school health services for pre-K through grade 12 students attending all of KS' campuses, preschools, community-based educational programs and camps, and a 24/7 Residential Life program (Medical, Behavioral and Athletics). Directs the strategic development and execution of an enterprise-wide student health department that meets national standards of care and best supports the mission of KS.

Directs activities related to student medical records maintenance, medical service organization and staff, contracted physical health, mental health, and team physician services, and state mandated physician supervision of athletic trainers, preschools, and the AED program.

Essential Responsibilities

Medical Management Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction for the organization's health services function, including nursing staff and other healthcare professionals. 
  • Negotiate medical and psychological professional services and supervises contract staff.
  • Ensures ethical standards, professional standards, appropriate level of healthcare delivery and confidentiality are maintained.
  • Ensures the continuous quality assessment/improvement and risk management for assurance of quality student healthcare.
  • Oversees staff to include hiring, termination, training, coaching and evaluating performance.

Medical Expert Responsibilities

  • Serves as a medical consultant on matters requiring medical and public health expertise.
  • Serves as a KS public health liaison to the Department of Health. Develops health and wellness programs as needed with the Physical Education Department, Residential Life Program, teachers, and Human Resources to support health, wellness and preventative medicine education.

Medical Policy and Procedure Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement medical protocols, procedures, and best practices to ensure high-quality healthcare services, driven by national standards of care and organization's mission.
  • Direct and maintain student records in compliance with Protected Student Health information policy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Develops, maintains, and updates policy and procedure manuals, written standing orders, training requirements and protocols, health forms, and quality assurance procedures needed to ensure consistent delivery of school healthcare throughout the enterprise.
  • Oversees the implementation of policies by medical staff, contracted staff, athletic trainers, preschool teachers, and other KS staff and coaches.
  • Maintains compliance with all healthcare licensure requirements for KS employees, contracted staff, and the Kapalama CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) waived laboratory, as well as for ensuring Protected Student Health Information compliance.
  • Ensures State and Federal health requirements for school settings are implemented including State mandated physician oversight of preschools, athletic trainers, and the campus AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) programs.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with independent prescriptive authority (APRN-Rx).
  • 10+ years of related work experience in the healthcare industry.
  • Current APRN license for Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
  • Hawaii Controlled Substances certificate.
  • Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certificate.
  • Current CPR/AED Certification.
  • Strong understanding of state and federal health and medical regulations. 
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent medical management and medical administration leadership skills.
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric clinic operations and previous supervisory pediatric clinic experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of school healthcare standards (including public health knowledge as it applies to schools).
  • Excellent ability to develop, document, and implement medical policies, procedures and standing orders.
  • Excellent oral and written and computer based computer-based communication skills to effectively communicate with staff, parents, students, and administration at all levels.
  • Strong computer skills including competency in Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of pediatric clinic operations and previous supervisory pediatric clinic experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted onsite at KS Kapalama campus Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
