Kamehameha Schools is searching for a Librarian to support our elementary division. In accordance with our campus identity of Oiwi Edge, our primary focus is to develop students who identify as strong oiwi Hawaiʻi leaders, and demonstrate the mindsets, attitudes, knowledge and skills articulated in E Ola!, Kamehameha Schools' long-term learner outcomes. Given this charge, we are actively developing our collective identity as oiwi-serving educators with a strong command of indigenous education practices aligned to our Oiwi Edge Learning and Teaching Expectations; educators who are well prepared and equipped to ensure all learners achieve the standards outlined in E Ola!   

The ideal candidate should have a deep passion for promoting the academic success and overall well-being of Native Hawaiians. As a member of a learning team or Kauhale, this individual will provide direct services to students who require additional intervention or enrichment services, primarily in literacy and mathematics, and oversee an afterschool enrichment program.  We are seeking someone who can access oiwi Hawaiʻi educational resources, e.g. moolelo, mele, oli, print and non-print text, and expertise within our kaiaulu, and who can provide general literacy and math support for a variety of learners.

This is a 2-year Defined Term position working Monday - Friday, 7:45am - 4:00pm, with full employee benefits.

Job Summary

Manages library services to provide the most effective resources to students, teachers, and other users. With a focus on grades K-5, coordinates and participates in the planning and teaching of information and research skills for all library users, serves as an information resource specialist to assist teachers in developing units of study selection for the general collection. Collaborates on the development of and maintains a Learning Innovation Center that supports the development of World class Hawaiian culture-based education and E Ola! Learner Outcomes. Oversees a library with a variety of collaborative learning environments, including student support services, media services, classroom technology services, and technology across the curriculum. Develops and implements a system of support to engage students, faculty, staff and community to advance an innovation model of a 21st century Hawaiian learning environment and the strengthening of a Native Hawaiian identity.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develops integrated curriculum and implements the teaching of information literacy, research, technology, and multi-media skills combined with applied technology and literature appreciation so that students are empowered to be critical and solution-oriented thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.
  • Collaborates with teachers to enhance and support grade level curriculum, supports administration with school related initiatives.
  • Leads the development of a learning innovation center to extend learning and the strengthening of a Native Hawaiian identity through interdisciplinary project and problem-based units where students have a variety of opportunities to show their learning through the use of appropriate literary and media resources, technology integration, and flexible workspaces. 
  • Manages the library's collection of books and other resource materials and equipment which includes assessing needs of the library, preparing related budgets, ordering and processing new materials, maintaining an environment where materials are readily accessible to students and teachers, keeping collections current with the age/grade level appropriateness and available up-to-date materials.
  • Serves as an information resource specialist to assist teachers in developing units of study focusing on instructional objectives and strategies by providing appropriate resource materials.
  • Collaborates with other librarians to coordinate the selection of materials for the general collection reserve or special collections, and develops lesson plans and units.
  • Able to effectively work with a team of school staff to meet the multiple student needs and outcomes of a learning innovation center.
  • Classifies catalogs and organizes library materials for maximum accessibility and availability.  Evaluates and recommends changes to supervisor to enhance daily flow of library operations.
  • Collaboratively works with the curriculum staff, nā Poʻo, faculty teams, data teams, and technology resource staff to effectively support curriculum, proficiency of instructional practices, quality processes, and strategies, and safe and orderly environment. Promotes and builds positive relationships and productive partnerships with school leaders, school staff, and other community collaborators.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.

  • Master's degree in Library Science.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a directly related field.
  • Knowledge of current principles, practices and techniques for school librarianship, educational philosophy and information technologies.  Also AASL's Standards for 21st Century Learners and NETS-s technology standards.
  • Ability to build a rapport with library users (students, teachers, staff, etc.); maintain a high level of professional integrity; and develop, implement, and coordinate programs and services to support a variety of instructional objectives.
  • Good interpersonal skills able to communicate effectively with individual or small groups of students and classes.
  • Knowledge of technology and library management applications; i.e. Dewey Decimal System, Online Public Access Catalog, various search engines and information databases.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary unit curriculum development, instruction & implementation, and assessment, particularly in grades K-5.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify and resolve existing or potential problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in demanding work environment and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. 
  • Outstanding personal integrity and ability to manage responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple functions and priorities in an efficient manner.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, verbal and written) to all levels of management, faculty, staff, external agencies, alumni, students, parents, and other school staff and community resource representatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willingness to support and facilitate the perpetuation of `Ike Hawai`i.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, history, and/or language.
  • Experience in working with ethnically diverse student and staff populations, especially Native Hawaiians.
  • Experience in building working relationships with a wide variety of groups to forward the mission of the organization.
  • Highly skilled in facilitating and working across multiple groups to ensure alignment of interests and resource optimization.
  • Experience with transforming and updating library spaces to fit the educational needs of a world class school.
  • Previous supervisory experience, training, or knowledge of supervisory techniques.
  • Knowledge of KS Mission and Strategic Plan.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently moves around the room, sits, perform desk-based computer tasks, utilize technology equipment and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk and/or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently stand and/or walk, move about the work area, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that may weight up to 20 pounds.
  • May frequently be in a squatting position, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Working Conditions

  • Work is conducted in an office environment, but the purpose of the work may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. but evening and weekend hours may be required to meet goals and objectives.
  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.

Compensation Benefits

Placement in the compensation range outlined below considers highest degree/educational credentials acquired from an accredited institution, and the number of full-time, verified years of eligible and related work experience. Salary is also adjusted to the appropriate work year.
