Kamehameha Schools is hiring a Senior Design Specialist to support our Kamehameha Schools Preschool program. This position will join our Kamehameha Schools Preschool instructional team and assist in designing and implementing HCBE professional development, coaching, and evaluation on E Ola! for preschool kumu and teaching assistants.
 

Job Summary 

 

Leads the design management and strategic implementation of Hawaiian culture-based education (HCBE) for E Ola! in the classroom for KS faculty. Works closely with internal executives, faculty, and staff, and external KS partners, to develop, evaluate, and improve new professional development pathways for KS faculty.  Lead the design of training modules, resources, curriculum supports, and professional development. Provides coaching and mentoring to teachers and other members of the design team, as a subject matter expert. 

Essential Responsibilities 

 

Project Planning 

  • Leads project planning discussions and work groups that establish project objectives, scope, risk mitigation, high-level timelines, cost-benefit analysis, project milestones and detailed work plans. 

  • Leads the management of projects using project management methodology and tools. 

  • Leads the planning, organizing, and conducting of research for use in understanding educational issues and developing solutions to improve KS educational programs and services. 

  • Leads data collection and analysis to facilitate decision making. 

  • Supports the instructional development of all teachers in understanding HCBE, E Ola!, standards-based curriculum, and assessments focused on improving teaching effectiveness. 

 

Product Design, Testing, and Evaluation 

  • Leads educational design discussions and takes ownership of milestones/tasks that establish organization-wide processes, training modules and training resources for student learning and educator performance standards development and assessment. 

  • Guides product design that is in the best interest of the KS educational system, while working with all campuses/divisions to identify and mitigate risks. 

  • Coordinates collection and access to necessary resources needed for design and/or implementation. Applies quality criteria to ensure alignment to project goals. 

  • Identifies risks associated with product design that are not fully within the project's control, but are important to success with becoming a standards-based system. 

  • Attempts to mitigate identified risks by proactively identifying problems and critically evaluating solution pathways. 

  • Utilizes appropriate channels to review, evaluate, and decide on design change requests. 

  • Leads the testing of the project efficiencies through development and execution of team-self review, peer review, and live trials with educators. 

  • Analyzes formative and summative data to assess project progress and goals, and makes timely improvements. 

  • Plans, executes, and reports evaluations of products and processes. 

 

Training and Facilitation 

  • Facilitates meetings, documents results, tracks issues, and ensures resolution. 

  • Serves as a subject-matter expert in curriculum and professional learning for school collaborators. 

  • Oversees training and facilitation on various educational standards products (e.g. process, resources) utilizing appropriate resources, methods and technology. 

  • Leads project team discussions to produce various deliverables. 

  • Able to be responsive to the needs of training or facilitation group participants. 

  • Utilizes adaptive facilitation strategies that are appropriate for each situation/group, fluidly transitioning between approaches with minimal dissonance/distraction. 

 

Communication 

  • Responsible for providing updates regarding development of project plans, implementation, and the achievement of milestones to various stakeholders (e.g., faculty, curriculum coordinators, division directors, principals, Headmasters, etc.); and addresses questions and feedback as appropriate. 

  • Able to successfully collaborate and communicate with stakeholders on a wide range of education issues. 

  • Utilizes appropriate change management strategies when communicating an innovation. 

  • Able to analyze and synthesize data and research and share findings, which may include recommendations and considerations. 

 

Administrative/Quality Control 

  • Provides administrative guidance, support and compliance in collaboration with the Supervisor, Design Specialist to include project budget development and allocation, and related accountability, and program evaluation to assess initiative strategic goal achievement. 

  • Leads/Co-facilitates periodic reviews of project planning documents (e.g., charter, work plan, etc.). 

  • Provides coaching and feedback regarding attainment of peers' work plan milestones, and individual goal achievement. 

  • Supports designers in sufficiently preparing when representing the division. 

  • Coaches others to lead facilitation that results in shared decision-making to produce various deliverables. 

  • Stays current in the field through professional readings, conventions, participation in PLCs, and/or engagement in professional organizations. 

Position Requirements 

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed. 

  •  Bachelor's Degree in Education or closely related field. 
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience. 
  • Previous PK-12 teaching experience.  
  • Experience with `āina-based (place-based) learning environments. 
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in applying adult learning theory, delivery of professional development, and coaching strategies. 
  • Experience teaching and designing curriculum focused on Hawaiian Culture-based Education. 
  • Experience in the use of the Hawaiian language in instruction and curriculum development 
  • Knowledge and experience in Native Hawaiian Education pedagogy.  
  • Knowledge of and experience with designing and assessing standards based curriculum and the integration of culture and curriculum (e.g., lessons, units). 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all stakeholders via face to face interactions, electronic, and web based communications. 
  • Ability to facilitate small and large group work sessions. 
  • Ability to effectively synthesize and present data for managerial decision making .
  • Self-motivated with the demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative. 
  • Skilled in working with various constituent groups. 
  • Familiarity with word processor and software/programs, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project. 
  • Ability to traverse SharePoint or other groupware. 
  • Experience working in collaborative teams to achieve desired outcomes and milestones. 
  • Ability to be adaptive and shift with job demands and conditions. 
  • Must be able to work independently and manage time and work to meet deliverables and outcomes. 
  • Structured Project Planning, Execution, and Control: Ability to methodically plan, execute, and control moderate to high-risk/prioritized initiatives. Able to manage project scope, quality, cost, and schedule to pre-determined constraints. 
  • Ability to guide and facilitate long and short range strategic planning across a cross functional educational organization.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in educational technology. 
  • Experience in in developing instructional/digital certification for teacher professional learning.
  • Experience employing project management methodology and tools. 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear. 

  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. 

  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully. 

Working Conditions

  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
