Description
The Medication Assistance Program Coordinator works with patients, clinical staff, the authorization team and others to identify patients throughout the Keck Medicine Enterprise who would benefit from enrollment in medication assistance programs—primarily—for high-cost, infused medications. The Medication Assistance Program Coordinator works with all stakeholders to assist eligible patients in enrolling in medication assistance programs and supports ongoing patient participation. The Medication Assistance Program Coordinator maintains required records and prepares reports to demonstrate the humanistic and financial benefits of the organization's medication assistance program.
Essential Duties:
- Serve as a referral point and as the expert in submitting applications for patients to receive provided drug and/or co-pay assistance from pharmaceutical manufacturer assistance programs.
- Coordinate the preparation and submission of applications for assistance by meeting drug-specific requirements for participation, including but not limited to forms, patient proof of income, relative clinical information, and physician or provider signature.
- Track each request to achieve timely approval and follow-up with appropriate individuals when not approved.
- Communicate with pharmacy staff to manage incoming drug stock as this stock is often “patient-specific”. Establish effective communication to ensure that assistance drug supply is used appropriately for specific patients in the drug preparation process.
- Request replacement drug when manufacturers require documentation for the release of prior approved drug replacement.
- Request refills for continuing treatment.
- Establish and maintain relationships that create recognition of the program and the coordinator as an invaluable resource for patients.
- Display effective file management by maintaining documentation and detailed records of program participation, medications dispensed, and value of medications provided to patients via the Medication Assistance Program.
- Ensure consistent documentation in the electronic health record as needed.
- Ensure that patient billing accurately reflects the use of medication assistance program drug when applicable.
- Interact with Clinical Pharmacists for guidance and, when necessary, providers to obtain appropriate clinical documentation to ensure accurate indications in the patient's medical record before completion of enrollment of patients in drug-specific programs.
- Liaise with pharmaceutical industry representatives when necessary to discuss issues relating to medication assistance, REMS and other drug-specific requirements for drug access.
- Understand the multiple avenues that are available for medication assistance based on the patient's level of income and pharmacy insurance coverage (e.g. copay assistance, voucher, medication assistance, et cetera).
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures to ensure a seamless medication-related access for patients.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Req High school or equivalent
- Req Specialized/technical training Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician school program.
- Req 2 years Hospital or health-system pharmacy technician.
- Req Organization/time management skills.
- Req Demonstrates ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients.
- Req Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
- Req Able to function independently and as a member of a team.
- Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Pref Certified Pharmacy Technician (PTCB)
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Req Pharmacy Technician (CA DCA) Registration with California State Board of Pharmacy.
- Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The hourly rate range for this position is $29.00 - $45.20.
