Application Chemist-Itasca, IL
Kelly Science & Clinical is seeking an Application Chemist to join our client's R&D team in developing and testing water-based barrier coatings for paper and film, focusing on oil and grease resistance, moisture vapor resistance, and oxygen transmission rates.
This role involves conducting application testing, analyzing performance data, and providing technical support for sales teams and customers.
The ideal candidate will work closely with new product development and customer support to ensure product effectiveness and quality.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct application testing of products using standard test methods or custom coating experiments.
• Operate lab equipment safely and efficiently while maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
• Record, analyze, and communicate test results, drawing conclusions to support product recommendations.
• Troubleshoot and provide technical support for sales teams and customers.
• Maintain compliance with ISO 9001 and follow all applicable waste handling procedures.
• Assist in short- and long-term research assignments related to new product development and laboratory testing.
• Act as a resource for Technical Service, Quality Control, and Production teams.
• Respond to daily customer inquiries in a timely manner.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements:
• BS degree (or higher) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science, or 5+ years of experience in a development laboratory or specialty chemical technical center.
• Experience in water-based barrier coatings or paper mill coatings development is preferred.
• Strong laboratory skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
• Knowledge of test equipment such as Moccon, COBB, COF, Sutherland rub, and Brookfield viscometers.
• Ability to work independently with moderate supervision and collaborate in a team environment.
• Effective oral and written communication skills for reporting and documentation.
• Background in the graphic arts industry or water-based coatings applications with barrier technology is a plus.
