APPLICATIONS ENGINEER – Virginia Beach, VA
Full Time / Direct Hire - $90,000 to $120,000

POSITION SUMMARY
The primary objective of the Applications Engineer is to develop technical solutions to our clients based on the information provided by the sales team, and our process and application knowledge. For this solution the Applications Engineer III shall create a solution, calculate the cost, create a plan to determine the delivery time and create the technical description for the quotation. For the project execution the Applications Engineer III will hand over the order to the project management team for execution and act as design process owner. The Applications Engineer III will create specific design documents to define and facilitate an understanding of the requirements for the design execution teams such as a P&ID, preliminary Bill of Material and control philosophy on all Level 2, Level 3 complexity, and high specification proposals. During the execution phase, the Applications Engineer III may be tasked with completing final specification of required system components that meet the solution requirements in keep with material cost estimates and timeline determined in the proposal phase. The Applications Engineer III may be asked during the execution phase to conduct general design and detailed design review of project documents and drawings to ensure compliance with design requirements and document acceptance or mark-up and return any discrepancies to the designer for corrective action.  The Applications Engineer III will apply good engineering practices in specifying the and designing systems to solve basic vacuum and over-pressure applications while working with System teams: System Leads, Project Managers, Designers/Programmers, Mechanical Designers on given executions, this role shall be performed under the general oversite and guidance of the Engineering Technical Specialists and the direct supervision of the Applications Engineering Supervisor. Proposals assigned and created will be for moderate to complex general and/or process vacuum solutions. The Applications Engineer III can be assigned work from all complexity levels.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide support, accept, and act upon day-to-day executional assignments, and guidance, from Lead that comply with departmental and company targets, objective, policy and procedures. 
  • Empowered, authorized, expected and accountable to escalate up the management chain, if employee does not get or believes they are not getting the support or effective day-to-day guidance required to perform as expected and/or to allow the department to achieve targeted goals 
  • Evaluates requests for quotation, obtain all necessary required missing information and resolve contradictory information
  • Designs proposed vacuum system solutions to meet the customer's requirements, calculating gas flows, pressure drops and heat load requirements that are low to highly complex
  • Selects and specify the pump technology and model and all major associated components that need to be quoted in the proposal
  • Prepares and keyboard technical equipment specifications of the proposed vacuum system solution as per standard business practices
  • Identifies and take lead in specifying customized features and components that meet design scope and customer's requirements and applicable code requirements
  • Checks all pump and system orders for accuracy and agreement with the quotation
  • Takes lead in executing and assist Project Managers in managing the technical aspects of the system design process to meet customer expectations. This includes but is not limited to application knowledge, customer requirements, review and approval of drawings and/or validation of design compliance, system functionality and equipment testing, and approving system meets design an solution requirements
  • Assists the After Sales Department, as requested, or directed in establishing safe operating procedures and in resolving field problems for systems that have not been full start-up or commissioned at site and provide secondary SME support for systems that have been fully started up, commissioned and accepted by customer as having met design requirements
  • Review quotation with assigned Project Manager after order receipt to assist in transfer of relevant process or application knowledge and to communicate any emails or conversations that may have occurred from time of proposal submission to order receipt
  • Be the technical point of contact for all proposals created and technical support over the life of the project
  • Gives prepared technical presentations, in house and in the field, to assist in marketing and training programs 
  • Review customer provided specifications and terms and conditions to access ability to comply and determine if department can provide a solution that will comply with requirements. 
  • Assists Sales and Product Market Management, as requested, in the development of new markets and new market strategies
  • Assures solution compliance by actively participating in review of system once completed and tested by reviewing results and comparing to solution design requirements and reporting any deficiencies to the Lead Project Manager/Engineer and Vice President of Systems 
  • Provides statistical information to maintain a company history of quotations and installed equipment
  • Reads, analyzes and interprets common scientific and technical, financial and legal documents
  • Effectively presents information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors to better understand the job objectives
  • Applies engineering concepts, calculates, designs, quotes and specifies vacuum systems
  • Collaborates with all Engineering department and intra-departmental personnel to ensure final design meets customer requirements
  • In conjunction with the Agile teams develops and/or promotes technical solutions which support the business requirements within their area of expertise. They may be accountable for specific deliverables and profitability in relation to the development of a project, support or may lead the technical activity within their area of specialism
 
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Required Education: Bachelor's Degree (four-year college or technical school)
  • Preferred Education: Master of Science Degree
    • Field of study: Mechanical or Chemical Engineering: Preferred
  • Experience: 5 to 7 years of experience in vacuum pump/systems or related experience: Preferred
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics ‘
  • Ability to write reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Must possess excellent technical aptitude with sound design and application knowledge about industrial systems (preferably from the vacuum industry)
  • Computer Skills: Proficient computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, Microsoft Suites (data base activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.) Familiar with Solid Works and AutoCAD software. Work in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
