Material Handler/Transload Operator (Temporary) – Tacoma, WA

Schedule: Temporary, Non-Union/conversion to Union
Location: Tacoma, WA
Pay: Starts at $20.25/hr with an increase upon conversion to the union
Start Date: As soon as possible
Schedule: M-F 7:00 am-3:30 pm with OT 

About the Role

We are seeking a Material Handler/Transload Operator to support cargo handling and transloading activities in a fast-paced, team-driven environment. This temporary role is responsible for safely operating equipment, moving freight, and ensuring accurate cargo documentation. If you enjoy hands-on work and want a pathway into a union position with higher pay, this is a great opportunity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Load and unload containers, trucks, and railcars according to work order instructions.

  • Safely operate forklifts, attachments, and yard trucks as needed.

  • Document overages, shortages, and damages (OS&D), including photo documentation.

  • Work closely with team members, supervisors, and office staff to meet operational deadlines.

  • Maintain accurate records and follow established cargo handling procedures.

  • Conduct equipment checks and report maintenance issues promptly.

  • Assist with additional departmental tasks as priorities shift.

  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work area.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Forklift certification required within 30 days of hire.

Experience
  • 2 years Min of Prior forklift experience preferred.

  • Transportation, logistics, or warehousing experience preferred.

Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to safely and effectively perform job duties.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain equipment certifications.

  • Knowledge of safety regulations and equipment inspection practices.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to interpret load plans and booking documents.

  • Willingness to learn and follow established processes.

  • Knowledge of warehouse or transload operations preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to hear, speak, and follow verbal instructions clearly.

  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, crouching, and accessing floor-level areas.

  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate equipment and complete documentation.

  • Ability to lift and move items up to 50 lbs regularly.

  • Ability to read instructions and documents clearly.

Work Environment
  • Work may take place in warehouses, outdoor yards, workshops, and office settings.

  • Exposure to varying weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, inclement).

  • May handle hazardous materials and be required to use PPE.

  • Work around moving machinery, vehicles, and active production areas.
