Materials Scientist

Temp to Hire
Location: New York, NY
Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm (some flex)
Compensation: $35-$45/hour
 
SUMMARY: This client is at the forefront of innovation in the field of materials R&D, a critical driver for advancing our most cutting-edge industries and shaping the future. Breaking away from the traditionally slow and costly R&D process, they leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to pioneer generative materials science. This Scientist will focus on the hands-on preparation of material samples for our research and development projects.
  RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare metallic samples for microstructural analysis using a range of metallurgical techniques, including sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching, adhering to established protocols.
  • Maintain detailed records of sample preparation procedures, characterization parameters, observations, and results.
  • Ensure the proper functioning and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with other scientists and engineers on the team to provide timely and accurate preparation of materials and materials data.
  QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in physical or life sciences, or engineering with 3-5yrs of industry lab experience.
  • Proven hands-on experience preparing and handling scientific samples is essential.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively within the part-time schedule.
  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory safety practices.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information.
Pluses
  • Prior experience in a research and development or materials testing laboratory
  • Background in materials science or engineering, particularly as it relates to metallic materials and metallurgy 
  • Familiarity with materials characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hardness testing, and material mechanical testing.
  • Experience alloying metals, particularly experience casting metal alloys using an arc furnace
