Mechanical Engineer - Inertial Sensors | Dayton, OH
Contract role 12+ months | Full-time with full benefits
Kelly® Engineering is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for a long-term contract position at our industrial technology client in Dayton, OH.
Overview
This role supports the development of advanced positioning, control, and automation products for construction and mining equipment, leveraging IMUs, GNSS, lasers, optics, and sonics, to deliver precise horizontal and vertical machine guidance from concept design through large-scale production.
Responsibilities
- Develop concept and architecture designs for Inertial Sensors (IMUs) based on product requirements.
- Translate product-level requirements into mechanical requirements and manage them throughout development.
- Lead new product designs from concept through high-volume production.
- Create prototypes and collaborate with purchasing and suppliers on part development.
- Define and manage the Mechanical Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Identify and document key mechanical characteristics (KCs).
- Prepare and present design analysis reports, including DFMEA, FEA, and tolerance studies.
- Oversee validation and testing to ensure designs meet performance requirements.
- Conduct thorough design reviews using analytical tools, prototypes, and cross-functional input.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams, track deliverables, and facilitate project reviews.
Background / Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 10-20 years of design and new product development experience.
- Proven ability to lead projects, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure on-time deliverables.
- Strong independent contributor with the ability to motivate and guide others.
- Skilled in creating innovative, cost-effective design solutions.
- Hands-on experience in automotive, sensor (IMU), or related product areas.
- Expertise in designing injection-molded, sheet metal, and cast metal components, with knowledge of associated manufacturing processes.
- Full product lifecycle experience, from research through warranty/end-of-life.
- Ability to conduct teardown and benchmarking studies.
- Proficient in mechanical simulation tools (FEA, Moldflow, structural, thermal).
- Experienced in coordinating with customers, suppliers, validation, and testing teams.
- Knowledge of product lifecycle management and change management processes.
- Skilled in DFMEA for risk identification and mitigation.
- Strong communication skills, with experience preparing and delivering technical presentations to customers.
Preferred Skills
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (PTC Creo preferred).
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical failures (e.g., bolted joints, seal/gasket leaks, premature wear).
- Knowledge of random vibration and shock concepts, with application in dynamic simulations.
- Strong data analysis skills; ability to derive specifications from field data.
- MATLAB experience a plus.
- Background in designing products for functional safety.
