We are seeking a Medical Technologist – Blood Bank to support the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Role will be performed on-site (day shift) at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD and may include weekend hours (schedule posted monthly and updated as needed to ensure coverage)

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:
(1) Perform laboratory testing pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements in the NIH Clinical Center
(2) Evaluate blood transfusion orders for appropriateness based on screening criteria
(3) Communicate with patients' nurses and physicians to clarify questionable transfusion or testing orders
(4) Perform compatibility cross match testing of donor and patient-recipient samples using automated and manual methods
(5) Independently resolve routine RBC blood group antibody problems
(6) Perform moderately complex testing to resolve complex RBC blood group antibody problems in consultation with technical specialist
(7) Perform component manufacturing duties including prepare blood components such as frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, leuko-reduced RBC, and buffy coats from whole blood collections and pathogen-reduced platelets
(8) Perform lot release and labeling for blood components
(9) Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers
(10) Manage special units by monitoring RBC inventory for antigen matched RBCs meeting needs of sickle cell patients requiring exchange transfusion.
(11) Prepare donor recruitment list or coordinate purchase of antigen matched red cells to meet transfusion needs.
(12) Manage Serum Cell and Rare Fluid Exchange (SCARF): Monitor the SCARF webpage for rare sera and rare blood group phenotypes that are suitable for supplementing the current immunohematology reference lab cells/sera inventory.
REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
(1) Bachelor's degree in Biology, Medical Technology, or discipline related to clinical laboratory science
(2) Minimum of three (3) years of blood bank experience as a medical technologist
(3) Certification through American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
