Kelly® Science & Clinical is hiring for an experienced, temporary, Research Safety Specialist at one of reputable academia-based clients in Detroit MI. Summary: The Research Safety Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the University's Chemical Hygiene Plan. This position focuses on conducting laboratory safety inspections, monitoring compliance with hazardous material regulations, and acting as a safety resource for laboratory personnel. This role serves as an operational support function and does not involve policy development or staff supervision.

Pay Rate: $31-32/hr – possibly higher
Hours: Monday – Friday, 9am–5pm EST, 40 hours/week; some flexibility with scheduling may be possible; no weekend work or overtime required
Desired Start Date: December 2025 – January 2026
Contract assignment Duration: 3-6 months, possibly longer
Core Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and detailed inspections of research laboratories to verify compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Assess chemical storage, handling, and waste disposal practices. Document findings and work with laboratory staff to resolve safety deficiencies.
  • Monitor daily research and laboratory activities to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations (OSHA, MIOSHA). Reviewing chemical inventories and verifying safety equipment (fume hoods, eyewashes, showers) is accessible and operational.
  • Assist the research community and PIs (Principal Investigators) in assessing physical and chemical hazards within their specific protocols. Provide technical guidance on the safe use of hazardous materials.
  • Assist with investigations into laboratory accidents, injuries, and complaints regarding hazardous conditions. Create detailed reports on findings and recommend immediate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of chemical safety related work experience, specifically within a research, laboratory, or industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting safety related inspections and audits.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical composition, structure, and reactive properties. Ability to identify incompatible chemicals and proper disposal methods.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state health safety regulations (OSHA, MIOSHA) regarding laboratory safety.
  • Ability to clearly explain safety requirements to researchers and document inspection results
***Certification as a Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) - preferred but not required for this role since temporary***
