Full time contract to direct opportunity for a Mechanical Design Resident Engineer. This person will sit in Warren for 4 days a week and 1 day in Bay City.
Mechanical Engineering degree required
Hands on experience working with REPS is a must
Job Purpose The System Release Resident Engineer is the on-site technical liaison responsible for the complete product development lifecycle of REPS steering systems, including design release, issue resolution, launch support, and warranty tracking. The engineer is embedded in GMNA and works directly with GM's Lead Engineer, cross-functional teams, and REPS Manager to ensure successful vehicle integration and program execution. Key Responsibilities Engineering Release & Development Support
- Serve as the primary technical contact for system release-related issues at GMNA
- Lead or actively participate in Program Development Team (PDT) meetings
- Manage and track Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), Product Change Requests (CRs), and PCEs
- Write, track, and close Engineering Work Orders (EWOs)
- Coordinate with DRE to manage open issues and resolve action items
- Support and schedule design reviews, peer reviews, and DRBFM/DFMEA workshops
- Assist in integration of GM DRBFM/DFMEA processes
- Participate in design optimization, root cause analysis, and system-level validation planning
- Support all vehicle build events (prototype, pre-production, and production) globally as requested by the GM Lead Engineer
- Track vehicle timing and part availability using GM systems (e.g., EVOS, part tracker)
- Maintain part number revision history and configuration
- Perform teardown analysis and functional evaluation of durability-tested parts
- Lead or assist in PPO (Pre-Production Operations) and manufacturing launch readiness
- Track, document, and support resolution of field issues using PRTS, GART, and related GM systems
- Coordinate and conduct root cause analysis of returned or restricted parts
- Participate in monthly and quarterly warranty review meetings and related reporting
- provide 8D reports and corrective action tracking
- Act as a liaison between REPS Manager and GM for all mechanical system-related matters
- Ensure that design teams provide accurate technical data including CAD, BOM, and specifications
- Ensure internal FMEAs and DRBFMs are linked with GM-specific risk mitigation requirements
- Communicate updates on program status, part readiness, and open issues with cross-functional stakeholders
- GM tools: PRTS, EVOS, Teamcenter, ECM, Jira, MERS, GART, SPR
- Office tools: Microsoft Excel, Project, Teams
- Engineering tools: CAD viewers, part trackers, BOM systems
- Familiarity with DOORs or requirements databases is a plus
- Minimum 90% on-site presence at GMNA
- Support GM behaviors and program execution culture
- Participate in cross-functional communication (engineering, purchasing, manufacturing, quality)
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple responsibilities, and represent the REPS Manager effectively
- Must coordinate with software/electrical resident engineers on system-level issues (where applicable)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of experience in steering system design, development, or validation, preferably in REPS
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, product integration, and manufacturing methods (casting, forging, machining)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to drive root cause investigations
- Familiarity with chassis systems (steering, suspension, brakes), crashworthiness, and vehicle dynamics
- Proficient in English, both verbal and written
