Position Title: Seed Lab Technician
Location: Woodland, CA 95776
Employment Type: Seasonal
Wage: $20/hour (DOE)
Job Overview:
The Seed Lab Technician will support the Quality Assurance department by conducting routine seed laboratory activities, including germination testing, purity, and noxious weed examinations. The role involves accurate data documentation, test evaluation, equipment monitoring, and processing outsourced tests.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform germination tests based on testing priorities and first count day.
- Prepare media for germination tests and evaluate seed germination, identifying normal/abnormal seedlings and reporting dormancy or other issues.
- Learn and perform purity and noxious weed examinations, and identify weed and crop seeds.
- Collect and record data, log samples, and report test results.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment performance.
- Manage file samples and coordinate retesting when necessary.
- Assist in training and overseeing temporary or semi-skilled personnel.
- Attend relevant seed testing workshops.
- Comply with company policies and procedures, maintain lab cleanliness, and follow safety protocols.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Experience with spreadsheets and database entry.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work under tight deadlines and seasonal workload surges.
- Strong stress management skills, especially under high workloads and deadlines.
- Team player with a cooperative attitude and respectful demeanor towards staff.
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma required. Additional education or experience in seed or plant quality testing preferred.
- Preferred degrees: Associate of Arts or Bachelor's in Agricultural Sciences, Plant Sciences, or Biological Sciences.
- Preferred certifications: Registered Seed Technologist (RST), Certified Viability Technologist (CVT), or Certified Purity Technologist (CPT).
Experience and Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Previous experience in vegetable and commercial flower seed germination and purity testing preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
- Ability to work with pesticides, lab chemicals, and potentially irritating substances.
- Capable of sitting or standing for long periods (up to 70% of the time).
- Must wear personal protective equipment when necessary (e.g., gloves, lab coat, dust masks, safety glasses).
- Availability to work overtime on weekdays or weekends as needed.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds and climb/descend step ladders.
